Many people imagine a job where their commute is less than 30 seconds to a home office where they work and have the flexibility to take care of life as they need to. Who's actually doing this and how do you connect with jobs like this? Consider six of the most common work-from-home opportunities to quickly "tour" some common options.

Before you approach any job or opportunity, you must know your own temperament. One person's dream job would be a prison for others. Ask yourself the following:

- Do I thrive on human contact or does it tend to drain me? Thrivers need more people contact than a work-from-home opportunity offers. Other the other hand, those who need some protection from others love a work from home career.

- To what extent do I honestly need a boss to direct me or hold me accountable? Obviously you need to be able to self-directed although some work-at-home jobs have plenty of accountability. - When you think about jobs or situations where you felt like you are doing your best work, could you ever do that working from home? While some tradeoffs might be made, at some point you simply have to be the kind of animal you are, working in your natural habitat. That may not include any work-at-home opportunities or in fact may be perfect in a home environment. But start with who you are and work from there rather than starting with a need.

Work at Home Option #1: Your Current Job

Many jobs offer some work-at-home time. Management consultants spend a lot of time working out of a home office when they are not on site with a client. Finally, Virtual Assistants provide clerical, administrative, and related services to their clients from home. What do they actually do? They transcribe materials from home, translate training and other types of communication from their home, and do all the coordination that work-at-the-office administrators do.
