How to get status/rewards out of frequent business travel ...

Hello. I?ll be starting work as a management consultant based out of San Francisco next fall. As part of the job, I?ll be on the road 4 days per week (usually flying out on Sunday and flying back in on Thursday). As such, I?m very interested in picking the right mileage program, and figuring out the fastest way to get elite status Because it?s SFO, it seems like the best airline to get into will be United.

So I?m wondering what credit cards and mileage programs I should get into to
a) maximize my miles and rewards
b) get to elite status quick

I?m also wondering if using the United Mileage Plus credit cards is better than using my normal credit card. For United, it looks like I get 1 mile per dollar spent. For my Chase card, I get 1 cent per dollar spent. So, would it be better to get that 1 mile or that 1 cent?

Other factors that might play in are that I?ll be staying at hotels during the travel, and will probably get into the Starwood system. Is there any crossover that I can take advantage of?

Might there be any promotions or ?challenges? to get to the elite status quicker with United?

Thanks so much for any help!
