Mayor Rob Ford wants Premier Dalton McGuinty to give the city cash for more TAVIS officers and he wants the gangsters to get out of town.
A day after he issued a press release declaring war on gangs in the City of Toronto, Ford said he?ll ask McGuinty for funding to hire more TAVIS officers during a meeting Monday at Queen?s Park in response to the Danzig mass shooting.
?They work well, the proof is in the pudding and look at how many raids they?ve done, look at all the guns we?ve gotten off the streets in the last couple of months,? Ford said at City Hall on Wednesday. ?If the Premier could come to the table and help us out with funding, that would be a huge asset for the city.?
The TAVIS (Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy) program was introduced by Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair in 2006 and focuses on putting more officers on the streets, particularly in at-risk communities.
Ford wouldn?t put a number on how many TAVIS officers he?d like to see the city hire with the province?s help.
?As many as you can, you can?t have enough,? he said.
Ford is also planning to ask Prime Minister Stephen Harper for any funding the federal government can provide.
?(I?ll ask for) anything he can do to keep this city the safest city in the world,? Ford said.
The mayor - who toured the shooting scene Tuesday - said ?enough is enough? when it comes to gang violence.
?I?m mad. What I saw (Tuesday), it looked like a war zone - blood on the concrete, paramedic gloves, bandages - it made my stomach turn,? he said.
?This is a great city, it?s a safe city, it?s a friendly city and I?m not going to have these thugs, these spineless cowards running around using the city as a shooting gallery.?
Ford said anyone caught committing a gun crime in the city shouldn?t be allowed to live in the city.
?I don?t want you back in the city, I don?t care where you go, I don?t want you back in Toronto,? he said.
Councillor Adam Vaughan said Ford?s talk of exiling gangsters shows he?s ?out of his depth? when it came to addressing the gang violence issue.
?If the situation wasn?t so serious, they might think he was joking,? he said.
Vaughan said Ford?s declaration of war on gangs and pledge to make life for gangsters miserable doesn?t make sense.
?Life for these kids is so bloody miserable they join gangs,? Vaughan said. ?Making it more miserable is not going to solve the problem. Being in a gang is a miserable life. Every one I?ve ever talked to who has left a gang has told me how miserable it was. They?re not living the high life.?
Provincial officials didn?t have much to say in response to Ford?s request Wednesday.
Neala Barton, the Premier?s press secretary, confirmed the meeting will take place Monday at Queen?s Park.
