Florida Atlantic Football Player Busted for Stealing 400 Pounds of?Copper Wire?

Wait?what?

I guess there?s a huge market for 400-pounds of copper wire these days.? There must be, otherwise, why would Cortez Ash, a cornerback on the Florida Atlantic football team, risk his college football career by (allegedly) stealing, then trying to fence, a bunch of copper wire.

Chances are that Ash probably would have lost his football scholarship from the Sun Belt Conference school anyway, seeing that the 19-year-old and his associate tried selling the 400-pounds of copper wire back to the scrap yard that they pilfered it from in the first place.

Smart move?? I think not.

From TCPalm.com?

Security cameras at Indian River Scrap in the 4600 block of 45th Street show two men on the property at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, the Sheriff?s Office said. The suspects broke through a fence and dragged the copper wiring underneath the fence, according to the affidavits. The burglary was reported by the owners at 8:25 a.m. Saturday.

About 2 hours later, Cortez Ash and Donovan Roberts, 21, of the 4000 block of 41st Square, Vero Beach, showed up at the scrap yard and wanted to sell several pounds of copper wire, the Sheriff?s Office said. The business owner, who had viewed the surveillance video and recognized the suspects, called 911.

And for the record, the copper wire has a value of $1260.? The value of a football scholarship is worth around $80,000, give or take.? You do the math.

Ash and Roberts were charged with burglary of a business, third-degree grand theft and dealing in stolen property.
