We heard from Joseph Kosinski a couple days ago that Disney's remake of the 1979 sci-fi movie The Black Hole is still on. Today, we learned a new writer has been hired to pen the script: Prometheus' Jon Spaihts.
Spaihts' recent credits include 2011's sci-fi thriller The Darkest Hour and Prometheus, and he has also been tapped to write Len Wiseman's Mummy reboot for Universal.
In the 1979 movie, a group of space explorers came across a spaceship orbiting a black hole. Aboard that ship was a scientist and a crew of robots. These explorers soon learned that those robots were the ship's former human crew members.
According to THR, the new movie is described "as being big idea ? philosophical and somewhat dark in tone."
When the original movie was released, it was Disney's most expensive movie at $20 million. No doubt, the remake is going to cost a pretty penny too with all the special effects required -- if it gets that far, that is.
If it can be made for about $130 million-ish (what Prometheus cost), then there's a chance will see it on the big screen. If it's more, we may be hearing that another writer will be taking a crack at the script somewhere down the road.
