School merger would help sports, economics

Editor:

I'm concerned about Hanover High School having only 20 boys out for football, not even two full teams. I'm also concerned about canceling the soccer schedule.

Hanover is the smallest Class A high school in enrollment in the area. Much ado has been made about the million-dollar remake of the Sheppard-Myers stadium but nothing about the kids who will play there.

High school coaches must take what comes through the front door and make a team. With only 20 players that leaves no room for injuries or boys quitting for one reason or another. Playing like they would have to would make them more susceptible to injuries and humiliation when playing larger schools.

The solution to this mess is the merging of Hanover High School and South Western High School. Not only would it help the athletic situation but it makes good economic sense to merge the two districts. The Hanover School District should never have been divided in the first place. I would not be surprised to see the state order a merger sometime in the future.
