Mishawaka murder suspect extradited from Africa, will be arraigned

A man arrested in Africa for the murder of an 84-year-old Mishawaka woman killed in late 2011 is now in the St. Joseph County Jail and Wednesday afternoon made his first court appearance.

Lois Hickey was found dead in her home in the 300 block of East Donaldson on Dec. 29, 2011 by a neighbor.

In March, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office filed multiple charges against 19-year-old William Karimu of Mishawaka. He had fled the U.S. to Sierre Leone in Africa, where he has family.

Karimu faces charges of murder, burglary and felony murder.

Bond was denied at his arraignment, and he was assigned a public defender.

The St. Joseph County prosecutor's office worked with the U.S. Justice Department to prepare and file extradition papers to apprehend Karimu. After the papers were filed, officials in Sierre Leone worked to find and capture the suspect.

Karimu arrived at the St. Joseph County Jail on Tuesday.
