Seattle and what could be an improved offense have caught the Texas Rangers? attention this spring.
In two wins over the Rangers, the Mariners have scored 15 runs and hit six home runs in 73 at-bats. For the spring, the Mariners lead the majors in runs at 7.5 per game and home runs with 24.
Conditions in Arizona favor hitters, but Rangers manager Ron Washington thinks there is more to the Mariners? spring surge. The addition of veteran hitters such as Michael Morse and Raul Ibanez has changed the look of what has been an offensively challenged club, Washington said.
?I?ve never taken Seattle for granted because they can pitch and catch the ball,? Washington said. ?They will always be in ballgames. They?ve just never had that experience in the lineup to get that hit when they need it. Now, they have guys who have done it in their careers.?
The Rangers were 10-9 against the Mariners last season.
Briefly: The Rangers return to work Wednesday with a doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs. In a morning B game, RHP Tanner Scheppers will pitch for the first time since Feb. 22. He has been out because of soreness in the left hamstring. LHP Robbie Ross will start in the regularly scheduled 2:05 p.m. game (texasrangers.com). ? 3B Adrian Beltre is also scheduled to start in the second game. Beltre made his spring training debut Monday and reported no difficulty with the strained right calf muscle that had sidelined him. ? Washington sent LHP Matt Purke to the minor league camp. Purke pitched only 151/3 innings in the Class A South Atlantic league last season and had shoulder surgery in August. The Rangers selected Purke with the 14th overall pick in the 2009 draft but did not sign him.
