G20 reach 'historic' accord on food speculation (AFP)

PARIS (AFP) ? Farm ministers from the world's top economies agreed on action on Thursday to tame the speculative trading blamed for the food price spikes that have hit consumers' pockets and sparked unrest.

"Today is a great day. We have reached an historic accord," France's minister for agriculture Bruno Le Maire declared after the Paris meeting, organised as part of the French presidency of the G20 group of nations.

"It's a 'tour de force' for the international community," he said, insisting the deal contains concrete measures and not just declarations of intent.

While the gathering endorsed tightening up market regulation to limit speculation, he said they will have to wait for G20 finance ministers to enact concrete measures.

The agreement supports establishing an international agricultural market information system, or AMIS, to remedy a chronic lack of output and stocks data that is seen as a major source for price volatility.

The ministers also agreed to a rapid response mechanism so the G20 nations, responsible for roughly three-quarters of global farm output, can respond collectively in the future to volatility in output and prices.

They also agreed to exempt humanitarian food aid from any additional export taxes or restrictions.

The G20 nations pledged to tackle agricultural commodity volatility in the wake of the 2007-2008 surge in food prices, widely blamed on speculation, that triggered riots in some countries.

Fresh price spikes at the beginning of this year are thought to have fuelled the Arab Spring revolts.

US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack called the agreement "an historic union of resolve in combating the pressing challenges of hunger and food price volatility."

He said the AMIS and rapid response mechanism "will provide us with better and shared info that will let us respond together" to future crises.

The agreement marks a major change for nations such as China and India, which previously viewed detailed agricultural production and stocks information as too sensitive to national security to share.

"It's a good vehicle to have an early warning system about the developing situation in some parts of the world," a source in the Indian delegation who asked not to be named told AFP.

"We can prepare well, plan well and the response to the triggers (of price volatility) can be better."

Along with India, Brazil insisted that increasing crops was the top priority in order to stabilise markets. Brazil and Argentina had led opposition to proposals to control agricultural prices.

"The best way to fight price volatility is by raising production," Brazilian Agriculture Minister Wagner Rossi told AFP.

Ministers failed to call for governments to make their biofuel programmes more flexible to lessen pressure on agriculture markets, as France had initially sought.

But Le Maire insisted biofuels were "not something ignored or left by the wayside," noting pledges for further research.

He dismissed suggestions that they had not made headway on market regulation, noting their endorsement of specific measures to limit the ability of financial traders to take speculative positions.

The farm ministers went into the Paris meeting divided on how far measures to control trading in food commodities should go but Le Maire said all G20 nations supported tightening the rules, including countries usually seen as opposing such measures, such as Britain.

World Bank President Robert Zoellick, who has led calls to reduce food price volatility which disproportionately hurts the poor, hailed the agreement.

"What we saw when prices started to surge in 2008 was the lack of information about (food) stocks, about availability can lead to panic in markets," said Zoellick. "Panic is what leads to price spikes."

The French branch of the poverty relief group Oxfam, however, derided the G20 measures as a just a band-aid and "very far from the massive surgery needed to attack the food crisis."

Haunt Me Still: A Novel : San Francisco Book Review

By?Jennifer Lee Carrell
Hudson Street Press,$15.00,406 pages

Shakespearean scholar and director Kate Stanley has built a fine reputation in the theatre, so when a famous actress-turned-royal bride wishes her to stage Macbeth, Kate pounces on it. But it seems like the curse of the Scottish Play is at work, as Kate and her troupe confront mysteries galore, strange pagan rituals, and a baffling murder. Could the curse be real, or is there a darker secret at the heart of Shakespeare?s most infamous work? Haunt Me Still is Carrell?s follow-up to her adventure-infused mystery Interred with Their Bones, and thankfully, she?s pared down the worst of those Dan Brown-esque trappings in the sequel. Haunt Me Still is more atmospheric, preferring the ominous tones of a murder mystery, and Carrell shifts gears effectively.

While the plot is a bit convoluted for its own good, Carrell efficiently vaults its few flaws with a very engaging protagonist and an intriguing cabal of characters, toting secrets and motivations galore. The supernatural trappings are interspersed nicely with the more down-to-earth threats and developments, and overall, Haunt Me Still is a pleasure. I don?t know where Kate Stanley is headed next, but I?m looking forward to finding out.

Three Great Avatar Fancy Dress Costume Ideas

With James Cameron's amazing block buster movie Avatar, he really created a whole new way of looking at aliens. And one of the most fun and coolest way you can dress up for your next costume party, whether you're a men or women, or kid, is in a great avatar fancy dress costume.

The alien world of Pandora has created a wonderful place for our imaginations to explore. And for the first time the human's are the bad guys and the aliens - the Na'vi - are the good guys! Here are some ideas of how you could dress up as the good guy, Avatar-style:

1. Jake Sully full Na'vi costume

Our true hero Jake Sully is a very cool-looking character in full Na'vi avatar form. If you have the body and the courage for it then you can just strip down, wear a loincloth. And body paint yourself in the distinctive aquamarine blue with darker blue stripes of the Na'vi.

Alternatively you could make or buy a Na'vi body suit that will keep you warmer and still create the full, cool effect of a Na'vi warrior ready to run, jump, fly and fight! Don't forget the get your hair back in a ponytail. If you have short hair a wig will do the job. And of course the defining feature of the Na'vi is the tail with a furry end.

You should also try to find a spear or some sort of plastic knife to wear - no Na'vi travels unarmed. You never know when you'll need to defend yourself on Pandora, no matter how peaceful the Halloween party me seem.

2. Clothed Jake Sully

The whole body suit may be a bit much for your costume, especially if you are pressed for time in preparation. A great alternative is a kind of half and half Na'vi and normal Jake costume - basically Sully's Avatar wearing his black t-shirt with beige trousers and shirt over the top. Much easier to prepare and just as cool - but the face paint or mask, ponytail and an actual tail are still a must.

3. Neytiri costume

For all the female Avatar fans out there, there is a true treat in dressing up as the sexy, wild and dangerous Neytiri - the Na'vi Jake first meets and then falls in love with. The key to this costume is really the same as the Jake sully full Na'vi costume. You have to go all the way and wear a full body suit or very little else, and a loincloth for protection.

But the effect will be wonderful, as you become the entrancing alien. And a great wig, tail and a spear will make the image perfect.

RIM defection triggers fresh slide in share price (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Research In Motion lost a second marketing executive and its shares dropped 7 percent on Monday, part of a tide of bad news that has halved the BlackBerry maker's market value this year.

Brian Wallace, who headed RIM's digital marketing efforts, has taken a job at Samsung, one of the companies that is stealing RIM's smartphone market share.

The second departure in four months highlights the difficulties RIM is having keeping pace with innovative market leader Apple and an army of handset makers using Google's Android platform.

More defections over the coming months are likely after RIM announced it would cut an unspecified number of jobs as it seeks to regain its stride in a smartphone race that it once dominated.

The exit brings into sharper focus the pressure on co-CEO Jim Balsillie. He took on more promotional duties after marketing head Keith Pardy left RIM in March, just weeks before the launch of the PlayBook, RIM's disappointing challenger to Apple's hugely successful iPad.

The PlayBook launch was criticized by many analysts who said the company rushed the tablet computer to market before it was ready.

The company disappointed them again last week by revealing dismal quarterly results and slashing its forecast for full-year results. That prompted analysts to downgrade the stock and its shares slumped 20 percent.

The shares fell a further 6.7 percent on Monday -- closing at $25.89 on the Nasdaq -- and have now have lost more than half their value this year.

RIM also faces pressure to change its unusual management structure. Balsillie and co-founder Mike Lazaridis share the jobs of CEO and chairman of the board.

Shareholders vote next month on whether the two should retain their shared roles, following a push by a disgruntled investor.

Trade publication Advertising Age said Wallace will become Samsung's vice-president of strategic marketing for the United States, based in Dallas.

Reuters confirmed his exit with a source at RIM, while Wallace also acknowledged the move on his Twitter page.

The change comes at a pivotal time for Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM as it works to push out new smartphones with the QNX operating system that it uses in its PlayBook tablet.

Last week RIM said its chief operations officer, Don Morrison, would take a medical leave of absence. He is expected to return later in the year.

Adding to the woes, third-party Twitter client Seesmic said it would no longer support the BlackBerry platform, and would instead focus on Android, Apple's iOS and Microsoft Windows Phone 7.
