Genomic atlas of gene switches in plants provides roadmap for crop research

June 30, 2013 ? What allows certain plants to survive freezing and thrive in the Canadian climate, while others are sensitive to the slightest drop in temperature? Those that flourish activate specific genes at just the right time -- but the way gene activation is controlled remains poorly understood.

A major step forward in understanding this process lies in a genomic map produced by an international consortium led by scientists from McGill University and the University of Toronto and published online today in the journal Nature Genetics.

The map, which is the first of its kind for plants, will help scientists to localize regulatory regions in the genomes of crop species such as canola, a major crop in Canada, according to researchers who worked on the project. The team has sequenced the genomes of several crucifers (a large plant family that includes a number of other food crops) and analyzed them along with previously published genomes to map more than 90,000 genomic regions that have been highly conserved but that do not appear to encode proteins.

"These regions are likely to play important roles in turning genes on or off, for example to regulate a plant's development or its response to environmental conditions," says McGill computer-science professor Mathieu Blanchette, one of the leaders of the study. Work is currently underway to identify which of those regions may be involved in controlling traits of particular importance to farmers.

The study also weighs in on a major debate among biologists, concerning how much of an organism's genome has important functions in a cell, and how much is "junk DNA," merely along for the ride. While stretches of the genome that code for proteins are relatively easy to identify, many other 'noncoding' regions may be important for regulating genes, activating them in the right tissue and under the right conditions.

While humans and plants have very similar numbers of protein-coding genes, the map published in Nature Genetics further suggests that the regulatory sequences controlling plant genes are far simpler, with a level of complexity between that of fungi and microscopic worms. "These findings suggest that the complexity of different organisms arises not so much from what genes they contain, but how they turn them on and off," says McGill biology professor Thomas Bureau, a co-author of the paper.

Vanderbilt Dismisses 4 Football Players As Nashville Police Investigate Possible Sex Crime

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Vanderbilt has dismissed four football players from the team and kicked them off campus while Nashville police investigate whether a sex crime occurred in a campus dormitory.

The school's public affairs department announced Friday that four players ? none of whom it named ? were suspended from the team. The university issued another release Saturday morning indicating they're removed from the team and on interim suspension from the university "effective immediately, pending further investigation and/or a hearing."

School officials say the players can't return to campus "without explicit permission" from the school's office of student conduct and academic integrity.

Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said Friday that the university's decision was related to the police investigation.

"The well-being of our students is of paramount concern to us, and we will not tolerate any actions that threaten safety and security," Vanderbilt vice chancellor for public affairs Beth Fortune said in a statement released by the university.

Aaron said the department's sex crimes unit began investigating Wednesday after Vanderbilt police notified them about "a matter that is alleged to have occurred at a Vanderbilt University dormitory."

"This is an open and very much active investigation," Aaron said.

Vanderbilt went 9-4 and beat North Carolina State in the Music City Bowl last year for its best season since 1915.

Brian Brown: Same-sex marriage not inevitable nationally

When asked whether same-sex marriage bans across the country will eventually be struck down following the landmark Supreme Court decisions on same-sex marriage, National Organization for Marriage President Brian Brown told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, that he didn't think that it would be " inevitable."

Despite this week's rulings, which declared part of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and dismissed an appeal made by supporters of Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage in California, Brown downplayed the victories claimed by gay marriage supporters, saying that the Court did not establish a constitutional right to same-sex marriage in Hollingsworth v. Perry , the case that considered the California ban passed in 2008.

"The court said, well, the proponents don't have standing. It did not say that there was a constitutional right to redefine marriage," Brown said on "This Week" Sunday.

President of the Human Rights Campaign Chad Griffin also joined "This Week" and said he's prepared to continue to "fight this battle on all fronts," through referenda, state legislation and federal court cases to expand same-sex marriage rights further.

Brown said the precedent set in California, where state officials refused to defend Proposition 8 - a law passed by popular referendum - is "horrific for our republic."

"If the governor and attorney general don't to want defend that law, you've just gutted the initiative and referendum process. This is not an American value," Brown said.

Brown called Justice Anthony Kennedy's majority decision in the DOMA case an "absolute travesty" and "incoherent."

He added that Justice Kennedy "says something that is patently untrue," that a person who believes "this truth, that marriage is the union of a man and a woman is somehow motivated by animus and discrimination."

Such an assumption, Brown said, "leads to discrimination against those of us who know that there's something unique and special about husbands and wives, mothers and fathers coming together in marriage."

"There will be a lot of attempts to use this decision to redefine marriage in other states. And we will stand for the truth wherever it is," Brown said.

Griffin, an advocate of gay marriage whose wins this week prompted congratulatory calls from President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, spoke of the broader status of same-sex marriage across the United States.

"At the same time while we celebrate, we have to acknowledge that there are 37 states in this country that still don't have equality," Griffin said.

Asked if he thought gay marriage supporters will win victories to expand same-sex marriage to other states, Griffin said, "I have all expectation that we will."

Griffin pointed to the history of social movements to predict the outcome of the same-sex marriage debate.

"This country has always moved historically - whether it was women's rights, or the Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's to today - we have always moved to greater inclusion and treating all of our citizens equally under the law," Griffin said.

"We're well on our way. We're not there yet, but we're well on our way," he added.

3. Golf: Park grabs US Women's Open lead

SOUTHAMPTON, New York: World number one Park In-Bee, chasing her third major title of the year, fired a four-under par 72 on Friday to take the US Women's Open lead just as fog halted the second round.

The South Korean superstar had a nine-under par total of 135 and a two-stroke lead over compatriot I.K. Kim.

Kim was in the clubhouse on seven-under 137 after a three-under 69 that included five birdies and two bogeys.

American Lizette Salas carded a 72 at Sebonack Golf Club for a four-under total of 140. England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff was four-under for the tournament through 15 holes when play was halted for the day, with the second round to resume Saturday morning.

"I think we got very lucky that we finished today," said Park, who capped her round with the last of her six birdies at the par-five 18th.

"I played very good golf today. I gave myself a lot of good opportunities, a very good ball-striking day. The long putts seemed to be going well today. I left a couple out there, but very satisfied with today's score."

Park, whose five titles in 2013 include major triumphs at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the LPGA Championship, opened her round with a birdie at the first.

She had two bogeys and two more birdies in her outward run, then gathered steam on the back nine.

At the 13th, she hit a wedge over the green but made a 20-footer for birdie.

At 15 she landed a sand wedge within a foot before draining a 12-footer at the last.

"I'd say it was a little tougher to play in the fog, but I made a birdie so I don't think it really came into effect for me," she said.

"I was able to see the pin on the third shot, so I think that was good enough."

Overnight rain softened the course, but players found it windier on Friday, with the conditions changing frequently from sunny to overcast to foggy and back.

That made a good round all the more satisfying, Park said.

"It really made me think today that with the wind and fog, it just really made me think. I think that is what the US Open is all about."

Kim had five birdies and two bogeys in her three-under 69. She missed a 12-foot birdie putt at her final hole of the day, the ninth, but was pleased to emerge with the clubhouse lead on seven-under 137.

"Anything under par I thought was going to be a great score," Kim said.

"Definitely more wind out there. The wind was a little different direction and it was changing a little bit. Definitely tricky to adjust to the wind on some holes.

"But the greens were a little softer with the rain, so I was able to give myself some chances."

Salas had two birdies and two bogeys in her even par effort.

"I'm not as pleased with it just because I was striking the ball very well," Salas said.

"At the same time, you have to look at the bright side, and you have to take into effect the wind and the weather, how it's a completely different golf course.

"I was still hitting my targets and even though the putts didn't fall, I still was confident over every shot.

"You just can't be too greedy out here," Salas said.

"Just hitting fairways, hitting greens, that was my goal.

"Eventually the putts will drop."

Park is trying to become the first woman to win the first three major championships in a year in which more than three tournaments were designated as majors.

Babe Zaharias won all three majors in 1950, comprising the Titleholders Championship, Women's Western Open and the US Women's Open.

"It's tough not to think about it, but I just try to think that's not a big deal," Park said.

"If I want to do it so much, it's just so tough and it puts too much pressure on you."

In 1961 Mickey Wright won the LPGA Championship US Women's Open and Titleholders but was third in the Western Open designated a major that year.

In 1986, Pat Bradley won the Kraft Nabisco, LPGA Championship and du Maurier Classic but missed out at the US Women's Open.

This year, the LPGA has designated five tournaments as majors: the Kraft Nabisco, LPGA Championship, US Women's Open, Women's British Open and the Evian Championship in France. - AFP
