Defining Fatherhood

The term father is defined: ?To be the creator, founder, or author of; originate.? (dictionary. reference.com/browser/father).

Many people struggle with sexual sin because of an absent or abusive father. Therefore, it would only make good sense that a remedy, not an instant cure, for that pain is to call on your true Father.

God is our Heavenly Father. He created Adam to take on the role of father as he passed on the blessing of giving him the earth to live in and subdue it, Genesis 1:28. Fathers have a great opportunity to bless their children.?We can speak life into their lives.?This is not simply done in verbal tones. We can do that by how we?listen, engage with your wife, their mother (divorced or not), how we conduct our finances, spending habits, paying our tithes. How we respond to negative situations in public and if we pray with our children. We, as dads, have a great opportunity to impact our kids for the better.

We speak lies into their lives as well. This can be what we say, how?we respond, how we live such as cheating on our taxes or other areas where we are inconsistent.

Unfortunately, many men are not engaged with their children. The lack of a father?s presence breeds a lack of morality in the home. This is not about being aggressive, but everything to do with a man being submitted to God and communicating to his children what God is communicating to him. We are to humbly speak truth. Dads have a responsibility to show their children the right ways to walk without hypocrisy. We as fathers have the opportunity for our lives to be a conduit into every facet of life our children live. When you are in the same room with your child?the quantity and quality time with them are both important. When you are with your children, are you able to have a conversation with them, on their level? Do you talk to them about what interests them? Do you identify things in their world for ways you can teach them? Don?t be sarcastic or negative. It may seem silly and often is, but making faces or comments doesn?t make you look better, it tears them down. Our daily decisions should be based on this.

Many that have struggled with sexual sin have stated to me how they are angry at religion as well. I am grateful Jesus was willing to point out the religion of the day that was damaging to many. And it?s always interesting to me how much that reflects what we see today. As a way of countering what is the right thing to do in religion, James offers us some insight in his letter. As James?1:27 states: ?Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.? What do orphans and widows have in common? Neither one have a masculine leader in their life. Again, what tone does the man set in the home? The morality status, discipline. Men are to be there for their families, not just to bring in more materialism but to interact and engage with the world of those they are most influencing. So if you are doing that, God bless you!

Unfortunately, many of the men I talk to have been frustrated with the level of conferences that only focus on men needing to step up to the plate. How many more times will we see a man yell from the pulpit, ?MAN UP!? Maybe there should be a disclaimer for conferences that want to offer that as the goal of the conference. I understand many men have fallen asleep at the wheel, but this is real life. We are to live and teach, live and teach, and live and teach as leaders. Restoration?Path offers resources to specifically target for men and their families how to deal with sexual sin. We offer this because we have seen the benefit of many men that have been willing to admit their sin and walk in truth and purity.

Many of the men I am around are doing what a leader should be doing. No, they aren?t all perfect, far from it. But what they are doing is striving for excellence, what every man should be doing. So, if you are doing what is best for you and your family, allow yourself to feel some accomplishment. I state this because some men live under the condemnation that they are never doing enough. The fact is they are doing enough and understand what to do well. So don?t listen to the enemy?s lies that you aren?t perfect. None of us are.

Many people know who their biological father is but have been robbed of this relationship because of an absent dad. Divorce is one area that we see in our culture where dads have been removed from the home. Many of the baby boomers felt this with dads trying to provide over and above materially what a family really needs and is therefore out of the home more often than should be. I don?t remember the material items so much as my dad actually taking me to practice or games.

I used to have a bad attitude about my dad working so much. Then I had to start paying my own bills and understood what it meant to have to provide for my own family. I have also known how many of us men want to fight for our families and many times are looking for that battle to accomplish for those we love. What I recommend is fighting for truth and protecting your family from being polluted by the world as described in James 1:27. There is a great sense of accomplishment and safety everyone in your home feels when others know you are doing for them what they couldn?t have done. That you are looking out for their best interest even when it inconveniences you. That you direct them in ways that are more beneficial, not just easy. With this type of leadership, a dad is creating respect as well. And as the teachings from Edmund Eggrichs describes from Love and Respect, men are created to desire respect, Ephe- sians 5:33. Men appreciate respect in their home from their children as well. Dads, we must earn respect not demand it. Rules without relationship = REBELLION.

At Restoration Path, we stick to the principles in Scripture of repentance and walking in purity and truth for every dad. If you sinned, take the consequences for what they are. After you do accept the consequences, make the necessary steps to set yourself up for success and to not engage in sinful acts again.

REMEMBER: When the father is misplaced, the mom is displaced and God is replaced.

Fathers: reclaim your place in the home. Remember that place is not won by clever arguments?or showing others you are tough. Many times claiming the authority in your home is done by?active listening and sharing your own faults and other ways God is growing you in His word.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, there are two ways to go about making home improvements. Either you splurge for something purely for the sybaritic pleasure of having it the Italian marble bathroom you?ve dreamed about; that skylight that your spouse has been hinting at for the last six years or you take a pragmatic approach, buying an energy-efficient furnace or repairing a leaky roof because you want to increase your home?s market value.

Don?t expect to score on both counts. Just because you pour $20,000 into your home doesn?t mean that your house is worth $20,000 more. Many homeowners spend on amenities such as phones in every bathroom or a decorative stone wall that are only peripheral to the value of the house.

Exactly how much you?ll recoup in costs depends on several factors, including the direction of the broader housing market, the value of the homes in your neighborhood, when you plan to sell the home and the nature of the project itself. In some housing markets, you could, indeed, earn more than your investment back on a remodeling project. Adding a midrange deck to a home in San Francisco, for example, often recoups well more than 100% of its costs on homes sold within the year of the project s completion. But you shouldn?t count on those types of returns. In Columbus, Ohio, the same project is likely to recoup less than two-thirds of its costs.

And keep in mind that the longer you hold on to your home after a remodeling project is completed, the less likely you are to recoup its value. That?s in part because design tastes can shift significantly over time. Remember when avocado green was all the rage? Also, there?s little reward for having the fanciest house on the block. A house that?s priced higher than its neighboring homes could be perceived as overpriced even if it does have more value.

This section examines a few improvements that real estate experts say pay off more often than not and some that rarely make a difference when it comes time to sell your home.

Kitchens

Even a few basic improvements to your kitchen can pay handsome dividends, For most buyers, [the kitchen] is the heart of the house. Paint, wallpaper, and even refloor the room if necessary. Consider sanding, staining or painting dingy-looking cabinets. Replace old cabinet hardware a low-cost improvement that makes a big difference in appearance. Just be sure to go with a classic design and, if possible, use high-quality materials ? after all, good taste endures. Expect to recoup between 70% and 80% of kitchen-remodeling jobs.

Creating New Space

As a rule, improvements that increase the functional space of a home hold their value longer than ones that just make a house look better. It?s also significantly cheaper than adding an addition to your home. Converting an attic into a bedroom, for example, can returns upwards of 75% of its cost. Turning your basement into a room for socializing will set you back, but about 75% of the costs are likely to be recouped.

An Extra Bathroom

Adding an extra bathroom with all the trimmings marble vanity top, molded sink, bathtub with shower and ceramic tile almost pays for itself. You should make back between 65% and 75% of your costs of remodeling a full bathroom, and around 65% of the costs of adding a full bath.

Decks

Installing a deck may be the most cost-efficient way to add square footage to your house, and of all the outdoor home improvements except painting, it may be the most reliable value. Deck additions generally recoup 85% of their value.

New Windows and Other Green Updates

The savings on your utility bills is reason enough to consider energy-efficient improvements, but they will also add to the resale value of your home. Efficient windows and doors, a new roof (maybe even solar panels), and new insulation may be pricey, but some 65% to 76% may be recovered at resale. When considering new windows, however, keep in mind that customizing windows with fancy shapes, bays and bows doesn?t necessarily add any resale value.

Swimming Pools

It?s commonly agreed that a swimming pool has no resale value at all. In fact, some home buyers spend thousands of dollars to fill in a pool after purchasing a property. The main reason pools repel more prospective buyers than they attract is that they need expensive upkeep. Running a close second is the fear of liability: Pool accidents are a quick way to end up the subject of a negligence suit. A lot of people simply don?t want the responsibility.

Manicured Gardens

Fancy gardens which will require time and money to tend usually won?t add to the offering price. Landscaping is for your own enjoyment. It may be a $40,000 investment, but it won t add $40,000 to the value of your house. The same goes for expensive fences and stone walls. They look nice, but buyers don?t pay up for them.

Basic Improvements

It may not be all that enjoyable, but it?s the basic improvements that may have the greatest return on your home?s value. You could have a beautiful new kitchen, but if your roof is leaking, you have a real problem. So if you?re thinking of putting your house on the market in the next year or so, be sure to tackle any problems with the home?s structure or mechanical systems before you, say, install that hot tub you?ve always dreamed of.

A few weeks ago I visited The Art of Video Games exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibition is relatively small, and if you don?t stop to play any games you can easily walk through all the rooms in?about half an hour. It?s divided into three main sections: an introductory area, an ?arcade? area where visitors can play famous games such as Pac-Man and Super Mario Bros., and a ?best of? area where various gaming devices (consoles, PCs, etc) were on display along with video samples of well-regarded games. It was also completely free, which is the right price for me.

Setting aside the particulars, the basic idea of video games in an art museum is an odd one.?Paintings and sculpture are?designed?to be viewed, but games are meant to be played (preferably while seated in a comfy chair).?While the ?arcade? section makes a certain amount of sense, the rest of the exhibition involves looking at games rather than actually playing them. The traditional manner of museum display (look but don?t touch) is inappropriate?for the medium.

But a more significant problem is that the exhibitors never show how video games are art.?To be fair, ?art? is difficult to define even when discussing a more established medium.?However, common?definitions of art usually?mention creativity, the unique?expression of an idea,?or an?aesthetic accomplishment above mere craft.?How does something like?Pac-Man qualify as art??It was certainly unique?when first released, but is there any underlying?idea beyond cute ghosts and a chomping circles? How is Pac-Man more than mere craft??I suppose if you define art in the broadest possible terms ? including Michael Bay movies, talk shows, and Superman dolls?- then there?s no reason not to accept Pac-Man as well. But if art is simply a synonym for entertainment, then the entire exhibition is nothing but pretense. Displaying?video games?in an art?museum is clearly?a statement?that video games are on par with the fine arts that usually appear in museums or galleries. But if any amusing diversion can qualify as art, then the only reason?to put it in a museum is the ?snob factor.? It?s in a museum/gallery, therefore it?s respectable.

On a more favorable note, the strongest feature of the exhibition is the evolution of graphics and visual design, with numerous examples from each decade. One of the earliest games, Pong (1972), is nothing more than a white square on a black background that bounces between two white lines on opposite sides of a television screen. Flash-forward to 2010, and games like Mass Effect 2 sport cutting-edge graphics, 3-dimensional environments, and a visual design that rivals any sci-fi blockbuster. The technological progress that allows for flashier visuals also allows for a full musical score and voice actors. While the exhibitors no doubt want to draw attention to the increasing sophistication of gaming narratives, that sophistication would not be possible without technological breakthroughs. In fact, no other entertainment medium has experienced such radical change in such a short time, and that was all driven by improvements in computing technology (film experienced several technological leaps, such as synchronized sound and the switch to color, but these changes were spread across a century, and many other aspects of filmmaking have changed little).

And yet the? actual? technology of gaming is mostly absent from the exhibition. There?s a small exhibit that explains some technical terms like the difference between 16-bit and 64-bit, but the attendees are never allowed to ?look under the hood.? The wires, chips, processors, hard drives, and other do-dads are not on display. There are obvious reasons why this is the case. After all, this is an exhibition in an art museum, not a science and technology museum. But the science cannot be easily separated from the art (if we?re willing to call it that), so the exhibition feels incomplete.

The Art of Video Games exhibition reminds me of the similar effort by comic professionals to gain academic and institutional respectability. Comics have largely been successful in this regard, and scholars now refer to the medium as art without rolling their eyes.? Perhaps video games will find equal success, though it probably won?t happen any time soon. When comic creators made their bid for respectability they could at least point to a few works that were acclaimed by critics from outside the comics community (Maus, Jimmy Corrigan, and classic strips such as Peanuts). By comparison, few critics outside the insular gaming community speak of Pac-Man with reverence. And even the best video games are little more than addictive diversions (Angry Birds, Tetris) or solid genre product (Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto).

But then again, who am I to argue with the Smithsonian? If they say shooting zombies in 1080p resolution qualifies as art, then I?ll go along with it. I?m an art lover.

Why Your Employees Leave And How to Stop Them

Did you know that almost one-fourth of all new hires leave their companies within one year of coming on board? A new study of 500 HR professionals by Allied Van Lines, reported in Business News Daily, found that the blame for this high turnover can?t be blamed solely on the economy or demographics. Instead, Allied found that failure to properly train, mentor and acclimate new employees to the workplace was a key reason behind their moving on.

Employee turnover costs companies substantially, the survey found. The average cost for filling one position was $10,731. But despite the financial hit from high turnover, the majority of companies still spend far more on recruiting and advertising for new employees than they do ensuring that the employees receive proper training. Allied Van Lines found that the average company spends just $67 per employee on ?onboarding.?

Companies considered ?best-in-class,? however, spent nearly twice that amount, and their employees were far more likely than those at the average company to stay with the business for at least one year, become leaders within the business, and meet or surpass productivity goals. The survey also found that although fewer than one in five companies has a dedicated budget for onboarding new employees, those that did have dedicated budgets were nearly twice as likely to be successful at retaining new workers.

Survey respondents said the three most common reasons new employees leave within a year are:

1. Relationship with their manager
2. Job performance
3. Career advancement opportunities.

Despite these issues, few companies in the survey were taking steps to deal with these problems. Only 66 percent of companies in the survey train new employees. Fewer than half (44 percent) have coaching or mentoring programs. Some 42 percent fail to clearly identify performance expectations or even job titles; just 32 percent set goals for employees to follow to advance in their careers.

How can your business avoid rapid turnover?

• Provide training and orientation so employees know what?s expected of them.
• Get involved with new employees? onboarding, even if they don?t work directly with you. Management?s involvement in welcoming new employees makes a huge difference, and is one advantage small companies have over larger ones.
• Develop a mentorship program or pair new employees with more seasoned workers who can show them the ropes, not only of the job but also of your business?s company culture.
• Meet with employees regularly to set specific goals for productivity, achievements and skills. Review progress on a regular basis and provide ongoing feedback.

Don?t wait until it?s too late to find out if your new hires are unhappy. Although 54 percent of respondents in the Allied survey say they conduct exit interviews, just 13 percent interview employees to gauge their satisfaction while they still work for the company. Keeping communication channels open goes a long way toward keeping employees happy.
