Bring Nomadic Employees Back to the Mothership - Philip Tidd ...

By 2015, 1.3 billion people worldwide will be working remotely. That's almost 40% of the entire global workforce. While we can thank technology and increasingly flexible office policies for the shift away from the office, for many companies, mobility has simply been an unintended consequence of trying to keep pace with change, as well as a calculable means to rein in real estate costs. But while the movement toward less square footage and mobile workforces will likely continue, we shouldn't discount the importance of the office.

Having consulted with scores of companies over the last twenty years, I have seen the power of physical place. A good workplace bonds employees to one another in ways that virtual communication cannot replicate. It reconnects employees to the company and offers an organization the chance to showcase its culture. A good workplace can transform a business.

But today's offices need to be reimagined ? and redesigned ? to make them more effective for a mobile workforce. Perhaps we even need to rethink the term "office" itself. I like "mother ship" and "home base." These terms reveal a yearning for the office as a place associated with comfort, security, learning, and collegiality ? even family. The office needs to be a place that calls nomadic employees back home, because it has the potential to refresh and energize them ? not stress them out with distractions and unwanted interruptions.

In a mobile world, companies need to think about what their office space is actually achieving. Does your physical space reflect what makes your company unique? Does the office inspire employees, promote camaraderie, and enhance productivity? When planning your office, it's important to consider some general trends happening in today's workplaces:

? An evolving need for collaborative and private space. The open-plan office promised increased collaboration, economies of space, and cost savings. What it's delivered is a dilemma: visually exciting offices with lots of buzz on the one hand, and on the other, a lack of privacy and quiet. Research done by Gensler (the firm where I work, sometimes remotely) bears that out. Our findings show that the most significant factor in workplace effectiveness is focus work. Employees rate it as their most critical work activity, but our research shows it as the least-supported activity in today's offices. To function well, an office must provide a healthy mix of spaces ? quiet, collaborative, and social.

Take Microsoft's new office at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam: the colorful, inspiring environment gets the mix of group space and private space right. And it helps that the Microsoft team has blended this new working environment with an open, trust- and results-based management style, allowing staff to choose how and when they go to the office ? all supported by excellent virtual collaboration tools.

? The rise of the emotionally intelligent workplace. Much has been written about the power and impact of the emotionally intelligent leader. If one of the key roles of the new generation of modern executive is to create a more emotionally open, collaborative working environment, then we should be designing physical space that supports that mandate.

To that point, organizations such Telefonica in Germany are doing away with their standard, hierarchical office layout (enclosed team spaces) and are instead creating an open, vibrant space with a variety of settings for meetings and collaborations among teams. When leaders moved out of their enclosed cellular offices and into the team space, not only did they feel more connected to their teams, but their teams felt more connected to them as leaders ? and to the whole sense of Telefonica's community.

22squared, an advertising agency in Atlanta, Georgia, is likewise fostering greater emotional/working connections at the office among previously siloed teams to bolster productivity. Conceptualizing its new workplace as a city grid with avenues, boulevards, and intersections among desks, the agency literally designed interaction into its space and increased collaboration by 20%, according to pre- and post-occupancy research done by Gensler.

? Generation whY in the workplace. More than anyone else in the workplace today, Millennials question the status quo. Why email when IM is faster? Why not form instant teams around a project when and where it works best? In response to this young workforce, a new workplace model is evolving in social media companies and other start-ups ? one built on speed, transparency, democracy, and a melding of virtual and real office spaces. In addition to a high degree of mobile technologies and channels used externally and internally, these offices are forging new ground in what I call "un-designed" space and what researchers call "empowered" space: Ultra flexible working arrangements that allow staff to team up as they like, where they want, and even take control over the design of their personal workspace.

In London's Tech City, young digital media companies are embracing self-customized office space which employees can furnish as they like. At ustwo, for example, the CEO is often found working in his off-the-shelf children's wooden garden playhouse situated inside the 10,000-square-foot open office. He typically takes his Skype calls or videoconferences from his laptop in the playhouse. Not only does it provide some privacy, but according to ustwo, it encourages creativity and is a culture-defining symbol.

There is still plenty of room and purpose for the twenty-first century office. It's one of the few tangibles that binds the nomads together and interprets for them in a very real way, how we work today. And if we design them right, our offices can be a catalyst for better business and a happier, more productive, and more connected workforce.

Natrona's Brecken Biggs Named Wyoming Gatorade Football ...

Brecken Biggs - Natrona County QB Named Gatorade Player of the Year
YouTube

In its 28th year of honoring the nation?s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, announced Brecken Biggs of Natrona County High School as its 2012-13 Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year.

Biggs is the third Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Natrona County High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Biggs as Wyoming?s best high school football player.

Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award announced in December, Biggs joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.), Wes Welker (1999-00, Heritage Hall HS, Okla.), Terrell Suggs (1999-00, Hamilton HS, Ariz.), Anquan Boldin (1998-99, Pahokee HS, Fla.) and Jerome Bettis (1989-90, Mackenzie HS, Mich.).

The 6-foot, 175-pound senior quarterback and defensive back led the Mustangs to a 12-0 record and the Class 4A state championship this past season.

Biggs passed for 1,584 yards and 19 touchdowns, completing 115 of 187 passes.

He also rushed for 697 yards and 14 touchdowns on 120 carries, adding eight interceptions on defense.

Biggs was named the Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year.

Biggs has maintained a 3.34 GPA in the classroom.

He has volunteered locally on behalf of a food pantry, the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the Special Olympics.

?Biggs is a very good athlete,? said Jon Vance, head coach at Kelly Walsh High. ?He can run the ball, he passes it efficiently and he made a lot of key plays on defense.?

Biggs remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.

The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Biggs joins recent Gatorade Wyoming Football Players of the Year Jordan Roberts (2011-12, Sheridan High School), Jim Shellenberger (2010-11, Natrona County High School), Austin Woodward (2009-10, Sheridan), Tommy Earl (2008-09, Natrona County High School) and Alex Stratton (2007-08, Cheyenne East) among the state?s list of former award winners.

Supportive Facts That Will Lead To Self Improvement | Rob Moore ...

It can often be difficult to know where to start when you try to do something new, and self improvement is no different. The trick towards effective self improvement is to discover the methods that work for you. All individuals are unique, and different things work for different people. That said, keep an eye out for new advice that may help you and use these tips to apply to your own self improvement.

If you desire to be successful in life, you will need a respectable coach who knows what he or she is doing. Every champion has a great coach; the advice of a knowledgeable mentor is priceless. Every person should help others find the way. If this wasn?t expected, how would each generation be able to achieve their very best? All champions have a wonderful coach.

Do you drink too often? Do you do other harmful things like smoke cigarettes? Our bodies are important to maintain, and should be treated with care. Kicking your worst habits is a large part of becoming a happier and more healthy individual. Take a hard look at your daily life and find things that could benefit from a positive restructuring.

Recognizing your limits when performing physical tasks can actually help you meet your goals. Do your best, but do not overwork yourself to the point of physical or mental exhaustion. Taking care to prevent harming your body is more important than reaching your goal. This will end up being counter-productive in your personal development.

Silence your worries. When you worry, you are imagining a horrible situation for yourself that has not yet come to pass, and probably never will. Instead of worrying endlessly about what might happen, start preparing for those scenarios. That way, you will feel prepared, and you will also be able to go on with your life.

Stress can impede your ability to be happy. While experiencing stress, our entire body is affected in both physical and mental ways. Eliminating stress is essential for thinking clearly and achieving goals. Schedule a time every day where you can relax, be alone, and empty your thoughts. Taking the time to renew your center will help you to find peace within yourself.

If you feel you are not making progress, try to see specifically what is keeping you from it. For a lot of people, this is very hard to do. However, if you can figure out what your weakness is, it?s the first step needed to change it. By eliminating problems, you can find your future path easier.

Most employers don?t care about your school or college, they care about the degree you earned and if you can complete the work. However, there are some instances, such as with financial institutions, that this may not be the case. It is really more important to simply have a quality degree that will open up opportunities for you.

We all make mistakes which includes making poor food choices once in a while. Stress is not good for you. Because of this fact, you shouldn?t worry too much about little things.

Constantly seek different experiences. Discovering new challenges is a great way to open yourself up to new possibilities. You are sure to learn new things while also developing new skills. You can set the bar for something that no one had ever accomplished. Try to do your own thing, instead of doing what has already been done.

Each person has strengths and weaknesses; therefore, put into practice the techniques which speaks to you. You have to apply these tips if you want to get anything done. You may want to share this article with some of your friends to help them personally develop too.

Former baseball star indicted for insider trading

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Former Baltimore Orioles all-star Doug DeCinces and three others were indicted Wednesday on insider trading charges involving the use of information prior to the takeover of a medical device company in California, authorities said.

In 2008, DeCinces was told by a close friend and official at Advanced Medical Optics Inc. that Abbott Laboratories planned to pay $21 to $23 a share for the company's stock, prosecutors said. At the time, Advanced Medical Optics was trading for about $8 a share.

DeCinces began buying Advance Medical stock based on that information and passed along the takeover details to three friends because he wanted to make up for previous investment recommendations that had gone bad, prosecutors said.

When Abbott's offer was made public, DeCinces sold his newly purchased shares and profited about $1.3 million, court documents show. Abbott acquired Advanced Medical Optics in January 2009.

DeCinces' three friends each bought and sold Advanced Medical stock and made anywhere from $140,000 to nearly $350,000, authorities said.

Also indicted on insider trading charges were David Parker, 60, of Provo, Utah; Fred Scott Jackson, 65, of Newport Beach, and Roger Wittenbach, 69, of Lutherville-Timonium in Maryland.

DeCinces, 62, was charged with 42 counts of securities fraud and one count of money laundering. Each of the fraud counts carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. DeCinces is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 17.

"To put it mildly, we do not agree with the decision to bring a criminal case against Doug DeCinces," said Gordon Greenberg, DeCinces' attorney. "But the proper place to have this resolved is in the courtroom and not on the courthouse steps."

Messages left for the other defendants' lawyers were not immediately returned.

The Securities and Exchange Commission previously filed a civil lawsuit against DeCinces that was settled last year when the former major leaguer agreed to pay $2.5 million. In the lawsuit, federal authorities named James Mazzo, Advanced Medical's former CEO, as the person who told DeCinces about the pending deal.

Mazzo is a senior vice president at Abbott and is not facing criminal charges. In August, in response to the SEC lawsuit, Mazzo's attorney said his client would be fully exonerated after a review of the evidence.

Also caught up in the insider trading case was Hall of Famer and DeCinces' former teammate Eddie Murray, who agreed in August to pay nearly $360,000 to settle federal civil charges. Federal investigators said DeCinces told Murray about the impending takeover. Murray neither admitted nor denied wrongdoing.

DeCinces was a third baseman during 15 seasons with the Orioles, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. He currently is president and CEO of a real estate development firm in Orange County.

Record Powerball result of changes to boost sales

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? The historic Powerball jackpot boosted to $500 million on Tuesday was all part of a plan lottery officials put in place early this year to build jackpots faster, drive sales and generate more money for states that run the game.

Their plan appears to be working.

Powerball tickets doubled in price in January to $2, and while the number of tickets sold initially dropped, sales revenue has increased by about 35 percent over 2011.

Sales for Powerball reached a record $3.96 billion in fiscal 2012 and are expected to reach $5 billion this year, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Des Moines, Iowa-based Multi-State Lottery Association, the group that runs the Powerball game.

There has been no Powerball winner since Oct. 6, and the jackpot already has reached a record level for the game. It was first posted at $425 million but revised upward to $500 million when brisk sales increased the payout. It's the second highest jackpot in lottery history, behind only the $656 million Mega Millions prize in March.

It took nine weeks for the Mega Millions jackpot to get that high, before three winners ? from Kansas, Illinois and Maryland ? hit the right numbers, each collecting $218.6 million for their share of the split.

With soaring jackpots come soaring sales, and for the states playing the game, that means higher revenue.

"The purpose for the lottery is to generate revenue for the respective states and their beneficiary programs," said Norm Lingle, chairman of the Powerball Game Group. "High jackpots certainly help the lottery achieve those goals."

Of the $2 cost of a Powerball ticket, $1 goes to the prizes and the other dollar is kept by the state lottery organization, said Lingle, who also is executive director of the South Dakota Lottery. After administrative overhead is paid, the remaining amount goes to that state's beneficiary programs.

Some states designate specific expenditures such as education, while others deposit the money in their general fund to help supplement tax revenue.

The federal government keeps 25 percent of the jackpot for federal taxes.

Most states withhold between 5 percent and 7 percent. There's no withholding in states without a state income tax such as Delaware, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Texas. A New York City winner would pay more than 12 percent since the state takes 8.97 percent and the city keeps 3.6 percent.

Powerball and Mega Millions games are seeing jackpots grow faster and higher in part because the states that play both games agreed in 2010 to sell to one another.

Both games are now played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands. The larger pool of players means jackpots roll over to higher numbers faster, which tends to increase the buzz about the jackpots which increases sales. It all can result in higher jackpots sooner.

"It really happened with both of these games became national games," said Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery.

Still, just seven of the top 25 jackpots occurred after January 2010 when the cross-selling began. That just points to the unpredictability of games of chance like lotteries. It still comes down to the luck of the numbers, Rich said.

It has been proven that once the jackpot reaches a certain threshold more players buy.

The Quick Shop in Ottumwa, Iowa, is one of the state's highest-volume lottery ticket sellers due to its location across the street from a John Deere farm implement factory.

"It's picking up by the minute," said store owner Mark Ebelsheiser. "We're selling probably 60 to 70 percent more than normal. When it gets up this high they really come out and get them."

Bob Allison, a retired Indian Hills Community College instructor and administrator, buys tickets weekly for a group of people at the college in Ottumwa. On Tuesday he and two golfing and fishing buddies went in together to buy additional tickets. Allison said he usually buys a few additional tickets when the jackpot gets so high.

He said he'd make a lot of people very happy if he won.

"My kids would probably retire quick," said the father of three daughters.

Between $20 and $30 million in tickets were sold between Wednesday and Saturday drawings for most of October. Once the jackpot hit $100 million on Oct. 27, nearly $38 million worth of tickets were sold by Oct. 31. As the jackpot grew to more than $200 million on Nov. 17, sales surged by nearly $70 million by the next Wednesday. Then the jackpot reached over $300 million on Nov. 24 and ticket sales over the next four days surpassed $140 million.

"Somewhere around $100 million those occasional players seem to come back into the stores in droves," said Rich, the Iowa Lottery CEO. The lottery also notices a significant increase in workers and other groups joining together in pools to combine resources to buy numbers, he said.

Trina Small, manager at the convenience store in Bondurant, Iowa, where a couple bought a $202 million ticket on Sept. 26, said sales have been heavy. She said Monday night Powerball sales were at about $800, at least $200 more than normal. She expects Tuesday and Wednesday sales to be even more.

"It's kind of like Black Friday all over again," she said.

Small doesn't usually play the lottery herself but said she may buy a chance at the record jackpot. She's just trying to decide if her chances are better buying it elsewhere since a jackpot ticket was sold at her store just two months ago ? the old adage about lightning striking twice.

"The odds are against you anyway but I'm pretty sure they're more against you getting one from this store," she joked.

Powerball has posted sales exceeding $714 million in the current jackpot run since early October and it's possible more than $1 billion in tickets will have been sold by the end of Wednesday when the next drawing is held.

A single winner choosing the cash option would take home more than $327 million before taxes.

Strutt said the chance of getting a winner this Wednesday is approaching 60 percent.

NF1 Genetic Disorder Linked To Increased Breast Cancer Risk

New research found a more than four-fold increase in the incidence of breast cancer in women with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF1), which adds to evidence that women with this rare genetic disorder may benefit from early breast cancer screening (mammograms) beginning at age 40, and manual breast exams as early as adolescence.

?The normal NF1 gene is one of a number of so-called tumor suppressor genes. Roughly one in 3,000 Americans (equal numbers of males and females) has a mutated copy that no longer functions properly and allows tumors to grow unchecked. About half of people with NF1 inherit an NFf1 gene mutation from a parent, and the other half are the first in their family to have an NF1 gene mutation.

In a small study of 126 women with NF1 at the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Neurofibromatosis Center, the researchers identified four cases of breast cancer, a four-fold increased risk for breast cancer in women with NF1 compared to the general population of women under the age of 50. NF1 is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of mostly non-cancerous tumors along the body's nerves, often resulting in pain and disfigurement.

Beyond their implications for breast cancer screening guidelines for women with NF1, the findings may also shed light on the origins and nature of breast cancer in those without the syndrome, the researchers say, because other recent studies suggest that some women without neurofibromatosis-1 had breast cancers fueled primarily by an NF1 mutation. A recent study estimated that 3 percent of all breast cancers in the general population are caused by NF1 mutations that arise spontaneously.

"When we study rare populations intensively, we learn things that also may be factors in very common diseases, like breast cancer," says Jaishri Blakeley, M.D., an assistant professor of neurology, neurosurgery and oncology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and leader of the new study. "What we learn from this population will help us learn more about the subtleties of different types of breast cancers."

Blakeley says the results show the need for medical specialty societies to develop guidelines recognizing NF1 patients under the age of 50 as a group at increased risk for breast cancer. Guidelines developed by medical societies would change clinical practice and, just as importantly, encourage insurance companies to pay for potentially lifesaving screening in younger women with the debilitating disease, the researchers add.

"There are guidelines for how to care for women at high risk for breast cancer because of a family history of the disease, or because they have the BRCA genetic mutations, but there are no guidelines for women with NF1," Blakeley says. "Women with NF1 haven't even been on the radar as a high-risk population. Now that we increasingly understand the risk, we have to make sure doctors are talking to their patients about the benefits and risks of early screening."

Blakeley says she recommends that her NF1 patients get a manual breast exam from a physician annually, beginning in their teens. She recommends mammograms beginning at age 40, 10 years earlier than current National Cancer Institute guidelines for the general population. Research has not yet determined the ideal time for NF1 patients to get their first mammograms; some physicians suggest age 30, the age recommended for women with BRCA mutations. Blakeley says that because radiation exposure can sometimes trigger benign tumors to change to malignant tumors in NF1 patients, she worries about an extra 10 years of radiation exposure due to mammography.

In people with NF1, tumors often are on, or just below, the skin and can be disfiguring and painful, depending on where they are located. They can also appear in the brain and large nerves of the body, resulting in neurologic injury. Sometimes the tumors are surgically removed or treated with chemotherapy or radiation. However, these interventions can be risky and do not result in a cure, so many of those affected must live with the tumors and the disfigurement or pain that may accompany them, says Amanda Bergner, M.S., CGC, an assistant professor of genetics and neurology at Johns Hopkins who contributed to the research.

Navantia, Reganosa and Gas Natural Ink LNG ... - LNG World News

Navantia, Reganosa and Gas Natural Ink LNG Carrier Ship Repair Deal

Navantia, Reganosa and Gas Natural Comercializadora have signed a framework agreement to offer a comprehensive service that completes the repair cycle of gas carrier ships to bring them into operation, guaranteeing an even more attractive and competitive product for the operators of the ships, as well as generating more activity in the Ferrol estuary.

Through this alliance between the three companies, clients will get greater added value and at the same time Ferrol will consolidate its position as a big international centre for the gas sector.

The document was signed in the regasification plant by Miguel Rodr?guez Lorenzo, Director of Repairs Fene- Ferrol for Navantia; Emilio Bruquetas Serantes, Director General of Reganosa; and Jos? Nemesio Rodr?guez Maneiro, Director of Sales of Gas Natural Comercializadora.

The framework agreement has already entered into effect, although the parties have agreed to have the legal structures in place that will govern relations between the three companies within thirty days.

Navantia has taken on the commitment to offer its clients this comprehensive repair service for gas carrier ships, including inerting, cooling of tanks, supply of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) needed to complete the repair cycle and making the vessel operational, etc., all of which can be done at the regasification plant.

For its part, Gas Natural Comercializadora will guarantee the availability of LNG at stable prices set sufficiently in advance, while Reganosa will provide the tankers with any services they require.

This joint offer is of great interest to companies and the region, given the location of the shipyard and the regasification plant in the same estuary, which in turn is situated at a strategic point on the Atlantic coast, where there is a large volume of marine traffic shipping LNG.

Mississippi Childhood Obesity Rate Slowly Improving Your Health ...

From The Sun Herald?..

The obesity rate for Mississippi?s children has stabilized, but the same cannot be said of adults. A recent study shows that by 2030, 67 percent of Mississippi?s adults are projected to be obese.

These projections released in September by Trust for America?s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation would indicate a significant increase from Mississippi?s current 35 percent obesity rate, expecting the state to hold its title as ?the fattest state in the nation for at least two more decades,? according to an article printed in a September issue of Sun Herald written by AP Medical Writer Mike Stobbe.

Recent data collected from Child and Youth Prevalence of Obesity Surveys, however, shows childhood obesity in Mississippi has remained level since 2005.

?We are making some progress. We haven?t taken a downturn, but we also haven?t got any better,? state health officer Mary Currier said. ?Don?t expect it to be a quick change.?

A 2011 CAYPOS study revealed the 43.9 percent rate in 2005 of obesity and overweight children grades kindergarten through 12 to have gone down to 40.9 percent. The decrease, however, is not considered ?statistically significant.?

On the other hand, the rate of obese and overweight white students decreased from 40.6 to 34.8 percent. In addition, the elementary student rate went down to 37.3 percent in 2011 from 43 percent in 2005.

The study, published in the Journal of the Mississippi State Medical Association, states the prevalence of combined obese and overweight public school students ?no longer appears to be increasing,? information they refer to as ?encouraging news for the state.?

The leveling off of these statistics may be the result of countless school programs and campaign efforts to encourage healthier, more active lifestyles in students.

One of these programs, Project Fit America, recently awarded exercise equipment to Gautier Middle School and also provided staff-led cardiovascular health and lifetime fitness education programs to the students.

?This program is one of many efforts they are involved in,? said Executive Director Sheila Grogan of Blue Cross & Blue Shield Mississippi Foundation, which oversees Project Fit and other programs throughout the state, ?The unique thing about our foundation is we only fund programs without measurable outcomes that can be identified such as a decrease in BMI over time or improvements in physical fitness tests.?

Currier said there are many things happening to help the health situation, but many things still to be done.

With the Healthy Schools Act enacted in 2007, many schools have stopped frying foods and incorporated healthier options in vending machines. Currier said there also has been an increase in farmers markets and having access to locally grown, unprocessed foods which avoid the excess fats, sugars and salts.

?The main thing is we have to change our eating habits,? Currier said. ?We find any occasion or event and celebrate it with food; We bring a ham, a cake. We need to change the culture.?

Hamilton's Great Adventure now in Google Play [Tegra games]

Hamilton's Great Adventure

The PC and console game Hamilton's Great Adventure makes it's way to Android today, and is available from Google Play for Tegra devices. It's a two-part affair, and both the base game and the expansion will cost you $4.00, but I'm really feeling this one and won't mind buying my own copy.

You play as an adventurer, and you need to work your way though mazes and levels, collecting coins and trinkets as you go along. You're followed by your parrot companion Sasha. Using virtual joysticks or a controller you walk along the level, until you reach something you can't walk past. If you reach that point because you weren't paying attention and the floor has dropped out behind you, you're done and need to restart the level. If you're stuck behind an obstacle, that's when Sasha comes into play.

Tap a button and switch to your parrot, who can fly around and trip levers, grab keys and do all sorts of things to unblock your path. When you've accomplished that, a quick tap takes you back to playing as Hamilton and you can continue. It's easy and fun gameplay, but as the levels progress things get much more complicated and really present a challenge.

The gameplay is plenty fun, and the visuals are a real treat thanks to Tegra 3 optimizations. Nvidia works with OEMs and developers to bring console quality gaming to Android, and Hamilton's Great Adventure is yet another winner from the TegraZone. Hit the links below to give it a try, and jump past the break for a few more screenshots and the game trailer.

Workers raise 1st section of new Chernobyl shelter

CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER STATION, Ukraine (AP) ? Workers have raised the first section of a colossal arch-shaped structure that eventually will cover the exploded nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl power station.

Project officials on Tuesday hailed the raising as a significant step in a complex effort to clean up the consequences of the 1986 explosion, the world's worst nuclear accident. Upon completion, the shelter will be moved on tracks over the building containing the destroyed reactor, allowing work to begin on dismantling the reactor and disposing of radioactive waste.

Suma Chakrabati, president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which is leading the project, called Tuesday "a very significant milestone, which is a tribute to the ongoing commitment of the international donor community, and an important step towards overcoming the legacy of the accident."

The shelter, shaped like a gargantuan Quonset hut, will be 257 meters by 150 meters (843 feet by 492 feet) when completed and at its apex will be higher than the Statue of Liberty.

The April 26, 1986, accident in the then-Soviet republic of Ukraine sent a cloud of radioactive fallout over much of Europe and forced the evacuation of about 115,000 people from the plant's vicinity. A 30-kilometer (19-mile) area directly around the plant remains largely off-limits and the town of Pripyat, where the plant's workers once lived, today is a ghostly ruin of deteriorating apartment towers.

At least 28 people have died of acute radiation sickness from close exposure to the shattered reactor and more than 6,000 cases of thyroid cancer have been detected in people who, as children or adolescents, were exposed to high levels of fallout after the blast.

Officials who showed reporters around the construction site Tuesday were clearly delighted at the colossus taking shape before them, but concerned about the challenges ahead. The shelter is to be moved over the reactor building by the end of 2015 ? a deadline that no one wants to miss given that the so-called sarcophagus hastily built over the reactor building after the 1986 explosion has an estimated service life of about 30 years.

The arch now under construction is only one of two segments that will eventually form the shelter, and so far it's only been raised to a height of 22 meters (72 feet). More structural elements have to be added before it reaches its full height of 108 meters (354 feet), and the work so far has taken seven months.

"There's no room for error ... the schedule is very tight," said Vince Novak, director of the EBRD's nuclear safety department, who added that staying within budget is also a concern.

The overall shelter project is budgeted at ?1.54 billion ($2 billion) ? ?1 billion ($1.3 billion) of that for the structure itself ? and much uncertainty lies ahead. One particular concern is dismantling the plant's chimney, which must be taken down before the shelter is put in place. The chimney is lined with radioactive residue that could break up and enter the atmosphere as it is taken apart. Laurin Dodd, managing director of the shelter project management group, said some sort of fixative will have to be applied to the chimney's interior.

"This is one of the most challenging parts, because it's an unknown," he said.

Other possible delays could come if excavations for the shelter's foundation uncover radioactive waste or even buried machinery. Dodd said other excavations unearthed several bulldozers and cranes that had to be decontaminated.

Even when the shelter is in place, the area around the reactor building will remain hazardous. The shelter is aimed only at blocking radioactive material from escaping when the reactor is being dismantled; it won't block radiation itself.

But when the dismantling and cleanup work is complete, the radiation danger will decline. How long that would take is unclear, but officials on Tuesday allowed themselves to envision a happier Chernobyl a century from now, with the plant's director speculating that the huge shelter may even become a tourist attraction.

Plant director Igor Gramotkin drew a parallel between the shelter and the Eiffel Tower.

"Originally, that was intended to be destroyed. But I think this (shelter) will be so impressive that even in 100 years people will come to look at it," he said.

Online sales jump on Cyber Monday, eBay shines

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Online sales jumped on Cyber Monday, sending e-commerce retailers' shares higher and suggesting strong growth from earlier in the holiday shopping season is continuing for now.

Sales on eBay Inc's online marketplace were particularly strong and Amazon.com Inc continued its rapid holiday shopping season growth, according to early Cyber Monday data released by e-commerce firm ChannelAdvisor.

EBay's shares climbed 4.9 percent to close at $51.40. The stock hit an intra-day high of $51.78, the highest level since early 2005. Amazon's shares gained 1.6 percent to $243.62.

Cyber Monday has been the biggest online shopping day in recent years, as workers return to offices and use computers to make holiday purchases. ComScore expects online sales to hit a record of about $1.5 billion by day's end.

Online sales were up 25.6 percent as of 3:00 pm EST on Monday, compared with the same period a year ago, according to International Business Machines Corp which tracks transaction data from 500 U.S. retail websites. In 2011, Cyber Monday year-over-year growth was 15 percent by 3:00 pm, IBM said.

Strong online sales growth on Thanksgiving Day and "Black Friday" sparked concern that shoppers were just buying earlier, threatening revenue later in the season.

"So far, that is not the case," said Jay Henderson, the strategy director for IBM Smarter Commerce. "Extending the shopping season has really just fueled additional online spending rather than cannibalizing days later in the season."

ChannelAdvisor said client sales - or sales generated by third-party merchants using the company's software - soared 57 percent on eBay.com early on Monday, compared with the same period in 2011.

The growth rate was five times higher than during the same period last year, said ChannelAdvisor, which helps merchants sell more online.

"The early eBay numbers are impressive," said R.J. Hottovy, an equity analyst at Morningstar. "They put together an effective marketing plan across several channels this holiday season - online, television and print."

EBay has been trying to move away from its online auction roots, emphasizing new items selling at fixed prices to better compete with Amazon.

"The numbers suggest they're having success reintroducing consumers to the 'new eBay,'" Hottovy said.

PayPal, the payments division of eBay, said the volume of mobile transactions it processed by 2:00 pm EST on Cyber Monday almost tripled versus the same period last year.

Client sales on Amazon.com were up 52 percent during the first part of Cyber Monday, ChannelAdvisor also reported.

"Amazon continues to look impressive to us since it is building on top of large numbers," said Scott Tilghman, an analyst at Caris & Company.

DISCOUNTS

Online retailers held back some of their best promotions and biggest discounts until Cyber Monday, which helped spur sales, IBM's Henderson and ChannelAdvisor's Wingo said.

Amazon offered $30 off its 7 inch Kindle Fire tablet, which usually sells for $159. The deal was only available on Cyber Monday and was still available at 5:00 pm EST.

EBay promoted Cyber Monday deals on iPads, made by Apple Inc, and Nook devices from Barnes & Noble.

These types of discounts attract shoppers to Amazon and eBay's websites, where they may purchase other items too, Wingo explained.

'WII U' SELLS OUT

EBay has also benefited as some hot holiday items sold out this year at some retailers. When that happens, shoppers often turn to eBay, where third-party sellers are usually still offering the items at higher prices.

Nintendo Co Ltd said on Monday its new "Wii U" video game consoles sold out at retailers in the United States.

The devices were still available on ebay.com on Monday at 10 to 20 percent above the suggested retail price, according to Jesse Divnich, an analyst at video game research firm EEDAR.

MARGIN QUESTION

Despite strong sales data, analysts are concerned that heavy discounting may pressure retailers' profit margins, online and offline.

The average online order size on Cyber Monday was $130.30 as of 3:00 pm EST. That was down from almost $200 during the whole of Cyber Monday last year, according to IBM.

Online order sizes are shrinking as consumers buy more digital goods, such as e-books, music and video, which generally cost less. However, discounting is also pressuring order size and that could feed through to lower margins, Morningstar's Hottovy said.

EBay margins should be relatively well protected because the company charges a commission on sales by third-party merchants and retailers.

Amazon operates like this, but, unlike eBay, the company also has its own product inventory so it may be exposed to margin pressure, according to Colin Sebastian, analyst at R.W. Baird.

How Important are Autoresponders to Internet Marketing?

Internet Marketing and autoresponders essentially go hand-in-hand. In today?s online business world, you simply cannot succeed at Internet marketing without the use of autoresponders. Autoresponders are used to achieve many of the marketing tasks that are essential to a successful online business.

Internet marketing can be very time consuming. Whether you do affiliate marketing or market your own products, an autoresponder is a big part of your marketing arsenal. Autoresponders are used to keep in contact with your past customers, and to develop a relationship with potential customers.

An autoresponder can be used to deliver sales messages to your opt-in customer list. It can be used to deliver email courses, to send reminders, and even to help you build an opt-in list if you don?t already have one. There are many creative ways you can use your autoresponder to make more sales and to build customer relations.

Any successful marketer will tell you that there are two tools that are vital to any type of online marketing ? an opt-in list and an autoresponder. LONDON???Could computers become cleverer than humans and take over the world? Or is that just the stuff of science fiction?

Philosophers and scientists at Britain's Cambridge University think the question deserves serious study. A proposed Center for the Study of Existential Risk will bring together experts to consider the ways in which super intelligent technology, including artificial intelligence, could "threaten our own existence," the institution said Sunday.

"In the case of artificial intelligence, it seems a reasonable prediction that some time in this or the next century intelligence will escape from the constraints of biology," Cambridge philosophy professor Huw Price said.

When that happens, "we're no longer the smartest things around," he said, and will risk being at the mercy of "machines that are not malicious, but machines whose interests don't include us."

Fears that machines could overtake humans have long been the subject of science fiction ? the computer HAL in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey," for example, is one of film's best-known computer threats.

Price acknowledged that many people believe his concerns are far-fetched, but insisted the potential risks are too serious to brush away.

"It tends to be regarded as a flakey concern, but given that we don't know how serious the risks are, that we don't know the time scale, dismissing the concerns is dangerous. What we're trying to do is to push it forward in the respectable scientific community," he said.

While Price said the exact nature of the risks is difficult to predict, he said that advanced technology could be a threat when computers start to direct resources towards their own goals, at the expense of human concerns like environmental sustainability.

He compared the risk to the way humans have threatened the survival of other animals by spreading across the planet and using up natural resources that other animals depend upon.

Price is co-founding the project together with Cambridge professor of cosmology and astrophysics Martin Rees and Jann Tallinn, one of the founders of the internet phone service Skype.

The university said Sunday the center's launch is planned next year.?

At at time when plenty of teams seem to be unable or unwilling to spot concussions until the game in which the injury was sustained is over, the Giants are in the small minority of teams that take extra steps to identify whether a player needs to be evaluated after taking a blow to the head.

?[T]he athletic trainers are spread out over the field, the doctors are spread out on the field, and so we?re now communicating through earpieces and radios,? Giants head trainer and senior V.P. of medical services Ronnie Barnes told Steve Serby of the New York Post. ??We?re being ? I?d like to say more vigilant ? in looking at the field, and making sure we?re not missing anything. ?We alert each other that we?ve seen something, and I think that?s been very helpful.?

Barnes said that perhaps four or five teams use that many people to spot possible concussions.

?[I]t?s been really helpful to me because I?m not running back and forth, because I can be down working with a player, and another player could go down,? Barnes said.

And when the Giants think someone may have suffered a concussion, the Giants don?t mess around with a cursory sideline exam performed in the elements and the noise and the confusion of the sidelines.

?Generally speaking, if we decide that a player has been concussed or has concussion symptoms, we take them inside,? Barnes said. ?And inside, we have an iPad, with a sideline assessment tool, which then documents all of the symptoms within minutes after they were removed from the field, and it also includes a balance test, which then we can look at during the week, to say, ?This is where he was during the game, and this is where he is on Thursday, on Friday, on Saturday.??

It?s a great approach. ?It?s the right approach. ?So the question now becomes why aren?t the other 27 or 28 teams doing the same thing?

While we completely agree with the NFLPA?s repeated requests for the use of independent neurologists during games, the biggest challenge for the NFL when it comes to concussions is striking the balance between removing from play those who has suffered concussions while also not removing from action during a key stretch of a game a player who ultimately is deemed to be fine.

?I?m a caretaker of the game with respect to sports medicine, because of Wellington Mara, and because we?re a flagship team in this league,? Barnes said, ?and I think it?s our responsibility to continue to be flagship, not only on the field, but in medicine.?

It?s not the product of a recent epiphany. ?Barnes explained that the Giants always have been ahead of the curve when it comes to concussions.

?I?d like to think that we?ve always had here at the Giants a high level of suspicion for concussion, and that we were conservative,? Barnes said. ??Lawrence Taylor, we actually used to hide his helmet when he got concussed. And he?d be looking for his helmet. Anybody who had a concussion, we would take their helmet so they couldn?t return to the game.?

If the current approach is good enough for the team that has won two of the last five Super Bowls, it should be good enough for everyone else. ?The NFL should study the Giants? approach, and the NFL should make it mandatory for every other team.
