Nelson cited a study showing that the number of wireless hotspots would grow more than fourfold to nearly 6 million by 2015.

While all lawyers know they have a duty to protect confidential data, she said, they too often regard the threat to confidentiality as more theoretical than real.

?We don?t like to be disconnected, but the more connected we are, the more we have to be careful about how we use? wireless technology, she said.

She and Mighell said users should make sure they are using a secure HTTPS protocol rather than the HTTP protocol and have a secure, 12-character alphanumeric password to log on to their laptops.

Mighell recommended a specific website called Shields Up, that will scan and determine the security vulnerabilities on your computer. He also said that while both Windows and Mac OSX operating systems have basic built-in firewall programs, they don?t offer enough protection.

Mighell also recommended turning off file-sharing unless there is a particular reason for having it on, and to have only one public folder for files that can be shared only when needed.

He and Nelson also recommended scanning your mobile device for malware after using any public WiFi network. And Mighell suggested investing in a good data loss protection program that will detect, monitor and prevent data from leaving your system.

Anti-insect wheat trials launched

The first experiments with plants genetically modified to repel aphids are under way in the UK.

Wheat has been engineered with a gene from a peppermint plant so that it emits a particular pheromone.

The smell is the alarm signal given off by aphids to warn of an attack by predators.

The researchers hope that this will act as a "no parking sign" to keep the pests at bay without needing insecticide.

This is the first trial of a plant deliberately modified to use pheromones to ward off pests.

The work is taking place at Rothamsted Research, the plant science centre in Hertfordshire.

Eight plots of land - each six metres by 6m - have been planted with the GM wheat in the past few days.

Aphids are one of the major threats to the cultivation of wheat in the UK and other countries.

Professor Maurice Moloney, director of Rothamsted Research, has described the insects as a "ten billion dollar problem".

'Proven' technique

The idea of creating a variety of wheat that could use smell to repel insects was first mooted in 1985.

According to Professor John Pickett, Rothamsted's scientific leader on chemical ecology, tests have proved the technique in the lab.

"The aim is to use natural processes instead of pesticides and address the public's concerns about pesticide use," he said.

The trials are being conducted behind security fencing to keep out animals and to guard against environmental protestors.

One set of wheat in the experiment is fitted with the peppermint gene only; another set has also been engineered with a synthetic gene.

The goal is to see if the plants give off a highly pure version of the pheromone, known as A-Farnesene.

Experiments have shown that the aphids' sense of smell is highly sensitive; the insects will not react if they suspect the pheromone has been released by a plant.

A further aim is to see if the pheromone attracts the aphids' main predator, the tiny parasitic wasp.

Negative publicity

Lab tests show that the smell has the twin effect of repelling aphids and luring the wasps.

One possible risk, raised during a briefing, is that the pests are driven from the GM wheat on to neighbouring crops.

The researchers say that existing wheat fields are protected by pesticides and wild plants have their own defence mechanisms.

The scientists are hoping that GM plants which cut insecticide use will help gain support for this controversial technology.

The science suffered a setback a decade ago amid negative publicity and public nervousness about GM food.

Britain's major supermarket chains do not stock GM food and approval for GM crops has to be given by the European Union.

Trials like this one, which are purely for research, can be authorised by national governments.

The widespread view among plant scientists is that the challenge of feeding a global population of seven billion requires genetic modification.

But they face a struggle to win over retailers and politicians not just in Britain but in the EU as well.

LONDON (AP) ? Scotland Yard's communications chief resigned Thursday, the third senior police figure to part with his job over the force's failure to come to grips with Britain's phone hacking scandal.

Dick Fedorcio stepped down after the force decided he would face disciplinary proceedings over a contract awarded to a former executive at Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid. The Independent Police Complaints Commission ruled that Fedorcio had to answer questions over the decision to hire Neil Wallis, the former News of the World executive later arrested on suspicion of breaking into voicemails.

The links between senior members of the News of the World and Scotland Yard have come under particularly close scrutiny because both organizations insisted for years that there was no evidence of widespread phone hacking at the tabloid.

Those assurances fell apart after it emerged that journalists at the paper routinely broke into the phones of celebrities and other public figures to score scoops or get leverage. Three parallel police inquiries, a cascade of lawsuits, and a judge-led inquiry have since lifted the lid on a host of illegal practices, from large-scale bribery to computer hacking.

The scandal's fallout has shaken Britain's establishment. The News of the World has been shut, the country's press watchdog has been scrapped, and dozens of journalists, executives, and public officials have either resigned, been suspended or been arrested over their role in the scandal.

Among them are former Scotland Yard chief Paul Stephenson and ex-Assistant Commissioner John Yates, both of whom resigned in July. Fedorcio's decision was announced Thursday, but he'd been on extended leave since August.

Politicians also have been drawn into the scandal. Kit Malthouse, London's deputy mayor for policing and crime, was asked why he had challenged police about the resources they were pouring into the phone hacking investigation.

Malthouse, called before the judge-led inquiry on Thursday, defended his skepticism, saying that the phone hacking investigation is projected to draw in some 200 people by 2013.

"That's the equivalent of eight murder squads," he said.

Access to pill boosts women's earnings - study

A new study may add tinder to the debate over whether the federal government ought to require health insurance plans to pay for? contraception. New research shows that access to birth control pills over the past 50 years has translated into higher pay and better careers for women.

After scrutinizing data from a multidecade survey, University of Michigan researchers determined that women who had access to birth control pills when they were in their late teens and early 20s tended to be better educated and better paid 20 years later compared to women who couldn?t get oral contraceptives.?Women who had early access to the pill were making 8 percent more than those who didn?t.

?Arguably the pill had some pretty big benefits for these women,? said the study?s lead author Martha J. Bailey, an assistant professor of economics at the university. ?I certainly would like an 8 percent pay raise.?

The new study,?published as a working paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research, used data from two long-term surveys: one that looked at health and another that looked at labor force outcomes. Both tracked women for decades.

The labor force study was started in 1968 and included 4,300 women who were between 14 and 24 at the time of their first interview. The women were reinterviewed every year until 2003.

Bailey and her colleagues were able to disentangle the impact of the pill from other factors, such as the women?s movement and equal opportunity laws, because many states in the 1960s and '70s only allowed women to get the pill on their own after their 21st birthday. Other states allowed women to get the pill when they turned 18.

So the researchers were able to compare the career trajectories and salaries of women who could get the pill at 18 versus those who had to wait until they were 21.

Data from the health study backed up the assumption that women between the ages of 18 and 21 were far more likely to get a prescription for the pill if they came from a state where they could legally get it on their own.

Early access to the pill changed many women?s life plans.

?Instead of deciding between dating and pursuing a career they could do both,? Bailey said.

The women who benefited the most from early access to the pill were those who came from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.

?One thing I think is important to point out is that we didn?t see a change in the number of children these women had, but we did see changes in when they decided to have them,? Bailey said. ?That slight delay in the birth of their first child translated into some pretty big gains in terms of lifetime earnings.?????

In their efforts to render cars and trains more economical, manufacturers are trying to find lighter materials to replace those currently used. But there is a problem: Lighter materials tend not to be as tough as steel or aluminum, so they cannot simply be used in place of these metals. Rather, it is a question of manufacturers deciding which components can really afford to have weight shaved off and how to integrate them into the overall systems.

Working together with Bombardier GmbH, KraussMaffei Kunststofftechnik GmbH, Bayer MaterialScience AG, DECS GmbH, the DLR's Institute for Vehicle Concepts, the University of Stuttgart and the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT in Pfinztal have now developed a polyurethane-based sandwich material that is extremely resilient. "To demonstrate the material, we manufactured a component that is subject to significant stresses and which has to fulfill a number of requirements the diesel engine housing for a train," says Jan Kuppinger, a scientist at the ICT. This housing is located beneath the passenger compartment, i.e. between the car and the tracks. Not only does it shield the engine against flying stones and protect the environment from any oil that might escape, but in the event of a fire, it also stops the flames from spreading, thus meeting the flame retardant and fire safety standards for railway vehicles. Kuppinger adds: "By using this new material, we can reduce the component's weight by over 35 percent and cut costs by 30 percent."

The researchers opted for a sandwich construction to ensure component stability: Glass fiber reinforced polyurethane layers form the outer facings, while the core is made of paper honeycomb. Polyurethane is a bulk plastic combining two substances. Since it can be adapted to fulfill various requirements, it is referred to as a 'customizable material'. In foamed form it is soft, and can be used for example as a material for mattresses; in compact form it is strong and hard. The researchers began by incorporating various additives into their polyurethane, altering it in such a way as to ensure it would meet fire safety standards. Then, the partners optimized the standard manufacturing process, fiber spraying, by developing a mixing chamber which allows even more complex structures to be produced in any required size. The diesel engine housing they made is approximately 4.5 meters long and more than 2 meters wide. "This is the first time it has proved possible to use this process to manufacture such a large and complex component that also satisfies the structural requirements," states Kuppinger. Previously, one problem encountered with fiber spraying was that it was impossible to determine the precise thickness of the polyurethane top layers. But now the researchers have found a way to do this, using computer tomography to inspect the manufactured layers and then applying a specially-adapted evaluation routine to establish their exact thickness. This information helps to simulate the strength of the component, as well as its ability to withstand stresses.

The scientists produced their diesel engine housing demonstrator as part of the PURtrain project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The demonstrator passed its first strength test in which the scientists placed it in a test rig and then applied forces to it at various locations, measuring the extent to which it deformed with flying colors. In the next stage, the researchers want to trial the component in a proper field test. If that, too, proves successful, it will then be possible to use the material to make roof segments, side flaps and wind deflectors for the automobile and commercial vehicle industry, and to ramp up the manufacturing process to produce medium volumes of between 250 and 30,000 units.

Following on from Jo Parry's piece about her work being copied, I had a look in the archives and found this piece from issue 1 of Computer Arts on the same subject. Funnily enough it mentions a case from 1994 where a photo library sued Corel over a CG image that clearly drew extensively on a library photo. I did a bit of reading up on it, and found the case cited in online discussions about Shepard Fairey's 'Hope' image, which itself fell foul of an IP infringement claim. Plus ?a change and all that...

Copy and be damned

Image stealing is big business in the digital age. New technologies mean that old notions of copyright have become redundant ? or at the very least, unenforceable

Everyone does it but they don't like to talk about it. Should you meet someone who says they never do it then you know they're a liar. We aren't talking self abuse here, that's legal, we're talking copyright abuse ? stealing other people's creative work and passing it off as your own. You must have done it. Scanned a magazine image, copied one, downloaded one from a Net newsgroup or perhaps you slipped in that photo library image a second time? No one is going to notice after all- are they?

Chances are they won't unless it's a well known image. Copyright law is close to being unenforceable ? or as arbitrarily enforced-- as the laws on cannabis. The police do not hunt down those who trade in stolen images, no boys in blue stake out design houses and if you report a copyright infringement to the police nothing will happen. You have to defend your copyright personally ? and win or lose you're likely to come out poorer and angrier than when you went in.

The concept of copyright is as simple as its enforcement is impossible. It protects the expression of an author's original work ? where original is used in the sense of origin ? not new. This definition is important. Copyright doesn't protect an idea, just its execution. You have no copyright until you express an idea in some concrete form.

The form can be a painting, drawing, photograph, electronic file or smears of blood on car panels ? if it's an original work then you automatically own the copyright. The standards for originality are extremely low ? copyright applies to the drivel you sent your first love and the snaps you took of the resulting children on holiday.

It's all yours. No one can use ten per cent of your image, or five per cent. The law is clear on this. if it's recognisably your work ? in whatever form or however altered ? your copyright has been infringed. You can demand recompense and if you don't get it you can go to court, internationally. Copy right law effectively dates from the Berne Convention of 1886. The Universal Copyright Convention was written in Geneva in 1952 and heavily revised in 1971. Out of interest, you have fewer rights and countries have fewer duties to authors, under the UCC than under Berne. Not all countries, even now, recognise copyright or subscribe to the Berne conventions, though.

Oddly, when the US became signatories to the updated Berne Convention in 1989. UCC became less important. The full texts, requirements, duties and consequences of copyright law as embodied in the Berne Convention fill tomes, so we aren't going to print it all here.

National law modifies Berne, though it must add rights rather than subtract them. However, what the books on copyright law are bloated with is precedent. Copyright is messy and, with new technologies, harder than ever to define and defend.

For example, if you design and program an interactive 3D digital world for sale, is it subject to copyright as the expression of an idea or patent law as a machine? Who knows, it hasn't been decided. Software is subject to copyright but some software patents have been granted in the US. Computers have blurred the boundary between art and artifact.

OK, so you believe that your copyright has been infringed, now what? Well, if you do go to court you have first to demonstrate the originality of your work. This is where you should plan on losing a chunk of your life, your savings and future earnings along with your belief in justice. There is little new under the sun. Where are the Dadaists now, eh?

Most creative work grows out of other creative work. Ideas seek freedom, they fly from mind to mind where they change and mutate. Am I stealing your work or paying you the compliment of using your ideas? One is legal the other not.

Women aren't alone in the battle of the bulge.

"I've always fought my weight. Portion size is a battle; food is plentiful," said Myles Noel who is training for his next marathon at age 61.

The numbers are staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of American adults (35.7 percent) are obese.?

The gender that seemed to be immune to the pressures of staying thin is now facing a reality check as they step on the scale. More men are taking their weight loss, health and fitness seriously. And the weight loss companies know it, launching campaigns that revolve around men.

Charles Barkley, former NBA basketball player and current analyst, is the pitchman for Weight Watchers for Men, making claims on the Weight Watchers website that he has lost 40 pounds.

It makes sense that WW would seek a famous athlete to represent their health and wellness program, and many men have joined the WW ranks.

Nutritsystem launched a men's program with Terry Bradshaw's face as the inspiration for weight loss. And Jenny Craig added a men's weight-loss program, calling it "Jenny for Men."?

While there is weight to be lost, there is also money to be made, and these companies understand individual programs targeted specifically to men open up their audience and clients.

"I think it's genius gearing it towards men," said Jennifer Burton, a registered dietitian at McConnell Heart Health Center in Columbus. She says men and women often lose weight differently.

"I think it is different. I definitely say things or suggest things differently for men than for women. Men are very black and white. You give them something to follow and typically they do," said Burton.

At Core Fitness Studio in Upper Arlington, personal trainers say they see more men who want to tone up.

"It's the mid-section. They start to see that gut start to hang over," said Russ Midlam, a personal trainer at Core. Midlam says weight-loss programs can be helpful in offering diet plans, goals, support and accountability.

"It's a huge industry, multi-billion dollar industry and there's a lot of really good programs out there, like the weight watchers programs is a good program. It provides a lot of accountability for people. They can take the guesswork out and have the support there," said Midlam who says having a balance between a healthy diet, cardio and weight training is important to taking off the pounds.
