Small Business Networking | Business @ redbright.co.za

You meet new people every day at the grocery store, at a business meetings, or even at your kid?s track meet. But are you taking advantage of these interactions to create opportunities for your small business?

Small business networking may be the potential to meet and connect with other people today resulting inside a mutually helpful relationship. Small business networking is crucial for the growth and good results of a business.

Creating potential business connections, or networking, can be one of the most important strategies to expanding your base of customers, business partners, and company. How do small business owners take control of their networking? Strategic networking, if done right, can be more effective than any advertising campaign. Here are a few tips to get the most out of your networking:

Create a strategy

As hard as you try, you will never be able to attend every relevant networking event and still run a successful business. Attend only the most worthwhile events. To start, ask yourself a few questions such as: Which networking events were the most valuable in the past? And are there any new events that might attract a target market you haven?t yet considered?

Narrow down your prospects

As soon as you have your method in place it is possible to start to examine your potential contacts so that you can choose who precisely you would like to connect with. By establishing which industries and customers have the most prospective it is possible to opt for their certain groups and events to create probably the most of your networking efforts.

Set a Goal for New Contacts

Each year a small business owner should determine his goals and objectives. One of these goals should be making a certain number of new contacts. Small business networking is a growing and changing process. Even one new member in the network is a good and attainable goal.

Avoid frequent mistakes

Many new networkers think that when they meet someone they automatically need to start selling. This will not only scare away your network potential but will ruin your chances to establish a business relationship. Networking should be approached as building connections between people for a potential long-term business relationship, not just a one-time sale.

Utilize Business Cards

A specialist looking business card can be a must for every individual involved in small business networking. Much more importantly, be ready to pass out business cards at each chance. A business owner in no way knows when he may meet a new and promising contact.

Now that you have your networking strategy in place it?s time to connect. But when you?ve exhausted the industry networking events where else can you find prospects? Here are a few ideas for non-event networking:

- Attend a seminar about your business or possibly a lecture on one thing you find intriguing

- Join your local Chamber of Commerce

- Participate on a local sports team or athletic training team

- Join a local volunteer group or start your own

Small business networking is a vital aspect of your marketing strategy. Making and keeping connections with potential customers, employees or even business partners will help your small business be a success.

(AP) ? Microsoft is scrambling to preserve what's left of its kingdom.

Since the company released its Windows operating system in 1985, most of the sequels have been variations on the same theme. Not that it mattered much. Regardless of the software's quality, Microsoft managed to remain at the center of the personal computing universe.

The stakes are much different as Microsoft Corp. puts the finishing touches on Windows 8 ? perhaps the most important piece of software the Redmond, Wash. company has designed since co-founder Bill Gates won the contract to build the first operating system for IBM Corp.'s personal computer in the early 1980s.

A test, or "beta", version of the revamped operating system will be unveiled Wednesday in Barcelona, nudging Windows 8 a step closer to its anticipated mass market release in September or October. The company will offer the most extensive look at Windows 8's progress since it released an early version of the system to developers five months ago.

Microsoft designed Windows 8 to help it perform a difficult balancing act. The company hopes to keep milking revenue from a PC market that appears to be past its prime, while trying to gain a stronger foothold in the more fertile field of mobile devices. It's a booming market that, so far, has been defined and dominated by Apple Inc.'s trend-setting iPhone and iPad, and Google Inc.'s ubiquitous Android software.

"Microsoft's future path is riding on Windows 8 and its success," said Gartner Inc. analyst David Cearley. "This is a chance for Microsoft to re-establish itself in a market where it's becoming increasingly irrelevant."

If Windows 8 is a hit, it could also help lift the fortunes of struggling PC makers, including Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. Besides giving businesses and consumers a reason to consider new PC purchases, Windows 8 is expected to spawn a new breed of hybrid machines that will be part computer tablet, part laptop computer.

If Windows 8 is a flop, however, it will increase the pressure on Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. His 12-year reign has been marred by the company's troubles adapting to an Internet-driven upheaval. As Microsoft has stumbled, faster-innovating companies such as Apple and Google have elbowed their way into a position to steer the direction of computing for the next decade or two.

Ballmer, known for his zealous faith in Microsoft, hails Windows 8 as the catalyst for an exciting ? and lucrative ? new era at the 37-year-old software maker.

Investors seem to be believers, too. Microsoft's stock has recently been trading its highest levels since April 2008, closing at $31.35 on Monday. The stock has gained about 21 percent so far this year. By comparison, Apple's stock has surged 30 percent during the same period, while Google's shares have dropped 6 percent.

Microsoft's financial performance traditionally improves when it releases a new version of Windows. The last upgrade came in October 2009 when Windows 7 hit the market. The company has sold more than 525 million copies of Windows 7 since then. Part of Window 7's success stemmed from pent-up demand; the previous version, Vista, was so clunky and buggy that many PC users stuck with the system they already had on their machines or switched to Apple's technology on Mac computers.

Windows 8 is radically different from its predecessors. The system won't even have Microsoft's familiar "Start" menu. All applications are spread across a mosaic of tiles, as part of a design Microsoft calls "Metro." The tiles, which resemble road signs, can be navigated with a swipe of the finger on the display screen or with a keyboard and a computer mouse. The tiles also provide a glimpse at the activity occurring in applications connected to the Web, such as email.

The system also is expected to enable users to easily back up their pictures, movies, music and other files on a Microsoft storage service called SkyDrive, which will compete against Apple's iCloud.

The operating system's versatility means it can be used to power computer tablets, as well as traditional PCs.

Microsoft badly wants a piece of the tablet market that has been cutting into PC sales since Apple introduced the iPad two years ago.

In the quarter that included the holiday shopping season, Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads, more than doubling the volume from the same time in the previous year. Meanwhile, worldwide personal computer sales dipped slightly, and Microsoft's revenue in its Windows division declined 6 percent. It marked the fourth time in the past five quarters that Microsoft's Windows revenue has fallen from the previous year.

Reversing or slowing that trend is critical for Microsoft. It still relies on the PC industry for about 55 percent of its revenue, according to Nomura Equity Research analyst Rick Sherlund. "The launch of Windows 8 should provide a few years of robust growth and opportunity for Microsoft to reposition itself to better defend its position against challengers," Sherlund wrote in a note after Microsoft reported the latest erosion in its Windows division.

Besides spurring more sales of the new operating system, Windows 8 is likely to drive demand for the next generation of the Office suite, another major moneymaker for Microsoft.

Windows 8 could inspire more PC makers to design machines that combine the convenience of computer tablets with the utility of a notebook computer. These devices would be similar to the so-called "Ultrabook" computers that offer a Windows-based version of Apple's lightweight MacBook "Air" machines. Once Windows 8 is available, the Ultrabook line could be expanded to include machines equipped with screen that swivels off the keyboard to take advantage of the system's touch controls and provide a tablet-like experience.

Microsoft clearly envisions Windows 8 becoming the foundation for pure tablets, too. That's why it's developing a version of Windows 8 that can run on the more tablet-friendly microprocessor technology licensed by ARM Holdings. That version will complement the Windows 8 design that will run on the Intel Corp. chips that power most PCs.

HP, the world's largest PC maker, is already counting on Windows 8 to deliver better times. The company's division that includes desktop and laptop computers suffered a 15 percent drop in revenue during its more recent quarter ending in January. CEO Meg Whitman, last week, said HP expects to release PCs and tablets running on Windows 8 in time for the holiday shopping season. HP's Windows 8 product line will include a tablet designed for corporate customers.

The biggest question hanging over Windows 8 is whether the long wait for the software will leave Microsoft hopelessly behind Apple and Google in mobile computing.

Whatever headlines Microsoft grabs during Wednesday's preview are likely to be quickly overshadowed when Apple shows off the iPad 3 ? a hotly anticipated event, expected to occur in early March.

Meanwhile, Google says more than 300 million smartphones and tablets are already running on its Android software, with another 850,000 devices getting activated each day. At that rate, another 155 million to 180 million devices could be running on Android by the time Windows 8 comes out in September or October. As it is, a version of Android is already running the second hottest-selling tablet, Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire.

"Microsoft is late to the game and this is a different game than they have been playing," Cearley said. "But if they hit a home run with Windows 8, it could still turn some things around."

Music Industry: Razzle Dazzle vs Music (Part 1) ? LaParadiddle

Of course the entertainment industry has always been full of flash and pizazz. Just take a look at the Ziegfeld Follies from the early 1900s. But in the arts there seems to be a constant tug of war going on between the razzle dazzle and the musical concepts or talent. At what point do we accept completely canned and squashed performances for the sake of watching a performer jump up and down in a shiny outfit with an elaborate set? Entertainment is meant to be a little magical, I know, but I personally don?t want it to turn into a complete house of mirrors.

I understand that lip syncing and pre-recorded vocals are not the choice of the performer at times. A huge performance, where dancing and acrobatics are expected, can make breath support and diction a little strained, and it?s a liability.

Lately I have felt like the music Grinch when I talk to people who don?t know much about the music industry. Sometimes I want to blurt out ?She didn?t write any of her songs!?, or ?His family was in the business, and that?s why he gets paid millions to jump around stage in a unitard shouting things that don?t make sense?, or ?her voice as been auto tuned to the point of no return?. However, that would not be fair and it would also be really obnoxious of me. For the same reason that viewers of reality TV are often not aware of the amount of production work a ?reality? show entails, many people just wanted to enjoy what they are listening to without being told that the singer is just famous due to connections and money, or that they may or may not have songwriting or vocal abilities. Same goes for our food?sometimes consumers choose not to read the ingredients of a product.

After being asked about a particular performer over the weekend and feeling like I was telling a child that Santa did not exist, I suddenly felt quite awful for being so negative about the performer. I felt that she bulked up her name in the industry by her antics and image, while her songwriting ability did not seem great to me, and her vocals-while good-were not outstanding.? It seemed so formulaic. Want to get noticed? Ditch your roots, change your look to something that pops out, change your name, put out a single that ruffles some feathers?and this is a route many performers go down.

Louise Brooks dressed up, Ziegfeld style (1929, The Canary Murder Case)

So, I guess my ?Part 1? to this debate is?what is the threshold for taking entertainment over talent? Are we OK with talent being dancing and big costumes, even if the individual is making money by being marketed as a singer? These entertainers bring happiness to many, despite how much musical ability we think or know is there. And it?s not exactly Max Martin who is on the cover of Bop Magazine. Is he?

Again, I have been sitting on these thoughts for a while. Reading this pulled me toward writing about it, which I would recommend taking a look at:

Santigold ?Disappointed? With The State Of Modern Music.

I want to hear your thoughts before round 2! Comment here, Facebook.com/LaParadiddle, and on Twitter!

A Review of the Foremost Personal Finance Software ? EU ...

Modern personal finance software can make it easier for you to keep track of your budget, expenses and investments. Whether you want to make sure your bills are paid on time, keep track of your various accounts or plan a budget, there?s a program that can make it easier. What follows are some criteria you should use when choosing personal finance software and a look at some of the leading programs on the market.

Try before you buy with the popular option of a test period. If you?ve never used a program before, this is something you should take advantage of.

While you may not have access to all of the features with the free trial, it will still give you a good taste of what it?s like. In this free period you will be able to discern whether or not the basic setup and ease of use are right for you. There?s no point in buying a program that you?re not sure about, so look for software that lets you try it out first. Personal Assistant Premium is not a computer program, but rather a mobile app that is well-suited to iPhones and iPod Touch. This is a very powerful app that allows you to keep track of all your financial transactions, such as credit cards, investment portfolios, bank accounts, bills and more. For an application that sells for $6.99, it gives you a great deal of information. Plus there is a version that doesn?t cost anything, yet it is not suggested if you are dealing with financial data that you want to keep protected. The version that you have to pay for lets you have a password in order to maintain confidentiality, while the free version does not. If you misplace your phone, in order to protect your security, the account can be deactivated for the time being. Software Metering is an area that is just loaded with helpful information, as you just have read.

Gnu Cash is a free alternative in an open source platform which can of course be used for personal accounting as well as business accounting. This can be a useful tool for keeping track of projects and customers for your home or small business.

While it has features designed for businesses, it can also be used to manage your personal budget. You can import data from other programs such as Microsoft Money and Quicken into GnuCash. This program however might not be the best for you if you want something simple to use right out of the box. You will have to take some time to learn how to use the features available.

You will find the right one if you look hard enough. You have the choice of online or on disk. You can even find some that don?t cost even after the trial period. The above information on personal finance software can point you in the right direction as you search for the best solution for you.

George Clooney, Brad Pitt Bromance Continues On Oscars Red Carpet

'Let's give it to Brad. I love him,' Clooney tells MTV News.

George Clooney's had another huge year, but the Oscar nominee is all about spreading the love, particularly when it comes to his best bro, fellow Best Actor nominee Brad Pitt.

Clooney hit the red carpet with girlfriend Stacy Keibler, rocking a fresh-from-the-runway Marchesa dress, and when he stopped to talk to MTV News, he admitted that as a past winner he's ready to pass the torch to his thrice-nominated but winless "Ocean's Eleven" co-star and longtime buddy.

"I agree, let's give it to Brad. I love him," Clooney told MTV News' own Josh Horowitz. "I'd be happy if he got it."

However, "The Descendents" star admitted, "I think it's gonna be an all-French night." He was referring, of course, to Oscar front-runner "The Artist" and its star, Jean Dujardin.

It's been a long awards season of love between Clooney and "Moneyball" nominee Pitt. The pair turned January's Golden Globes into a veritable lovefest.

After Clooney ribbed his bud while presenting his nominated film "Moneyball," Pitt returned the favor when he made his way to the stage to introduce Clooney's "The Ides of March."

Later, when Clooney won the Globe, he spent most of his speech lavishing love on Pitt, saying, "I wanted to say it's nice to see Brad and it's nice to be able to tell him not just what wonderful work he's doing in two films this year, but also what wonderful work he does in the world to the rest of the people. I'm a fan."

The superstar is ready for this year's awards season to come to an end, though, telling MTV, "You're really ready to stop for a while, you know. There's a little too much slapping everybody on the back."

But that doesn't mean he's not excited for the year ahead, especially for his Alfonso Cuarón sci-fi epic "Gravity," which co-stars another Oscar winner, Sandra Bullock.

"Yeah, I'm excited about that film," Clooney said, telling Horowitz that the much-anticipated flick will feature unbroken 12-minute shots and "all kinds of other things. It's a really interesting, wild film," Clooney added. "I'm excited. Visually, it should be unbelievable."

The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Keep it locked at MTV.com all night and beyond for updates on the night's big winners and the best red-carpet fashion. Join the live conversation by tweeting @MTVNews with the hashtag #Oscars.

'The Artist' aims to bring silence back to Oscars

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Meryl Streep might join the acting three-peat club with a third Academy Award. Jean Dujardin could become the first Frenchman to win best actor. Christopher Plummer is in line to become the oldest acting winner ever at 82.

And "The Artist" is favored to become the only silent movie to take the best-picture prize since the first Oscar ceremony 83 years ago.

Along with Streep, Hollywood's big night on Sunday has plenty of returning stars, too, with past Oscar winners and nominees such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Glenn Close, Michelle Williams and Nick Nolte in the running again.

The show also has a returning favorite as ringmaster: After an eight-year absence, Billy Crystal is back for his ninth time as host.

Because of a change in voting rules, the Oscars feature nine best-picture nominees for the first time, instead of the 10 they had the last two years.

Competing against "The Artist" for the top honor are Clooney's family drama "The Descendants"; the Deep South tale "The Help," featuring best-actress nominee Viola Davis and supporting-actress favorite Octavia Spencer; and the Paris adventure "Hugo," from director Martin Scorsese.

Also in the lineup: the romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris," from writer-director Woody Allen; Pitt's baseball tale "Moneyball" and his family saga "The Tree of Life"; the World War I epic "War Horse," directed by Steven Spielberg; and Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock's Sept. 11 story "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

"Hugo" leads with 11 nominations, with "The Artist" right behind with 10.

Spencer's a virtual lock for supporting actress, having dominated earlier film honors for her breakout role in "The Help" as a brash maid in 1960s Mississippi. The same holds true for Plummer, the front-runner for supporting actor for his role as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in "Beginners."

The lead-acting categories are where the drama lies. Best actress shapes up as a two-woman race between Davis as a courageous maid leading an effort to reveal the hardships of black housekeepers' lives in "The Help" and Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

The record-holder with 17 acting nominations, Streep has won twice and would become only the fifth performer to receive three Oscars. Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Brennan all earned three, while Katharine Hepburn won four.

It's been almost three decades since Streep last received an Oscar, for 1982's "Sophie's Choice." Though she has the most acting nominations, she also has the most losses ? 14. Another loss would be her 13th in a row.

Best actor also looks like a two-person contest between Clooney as the distressed patriarch of a Hawaiian clan in "The Descendants" and Dujardin as a silent-era superstar whose career tanks as talking pictures take over in "The Artist."

It would be the second Oscar for Clooney, who won the supporting-actor prize for 2005's "Syriana." While French actresses have won before, among them Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche, Dujardin would be the first actor from France to receive an Oscar.

Dujardin was picked as best actor Saturday at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film, where "The Artist" ruled with four prizes, including best picture and director for Michel Hazanavicius, who is favored for the same trophy at the Oscars.

"The Artist" has dominated Hollywood honors this season, winning key prizes at the Golden Globes and awards shows held by the Directors, Producers and Screen Actors guilds.

"This means a lot, because it's a small movie. It's not expensive. We did it with small money," Hazanavicius said backstage at the Spirit Awards. "And it's black and white and silent."

If "The Artist" comes away with the best-picture trophy, it would be the first win for a silent film since the war story "Wings" was named outstanding picture at the inaugural Oscars in 1929.

The 84th Academy Awards show begins at 8:30 p.m. EST, broadcast live on ABC from the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles.

Wine Club, Wine Gifts and Wine Gift Baskets ? Copywriting Skills ...

blogging tips

If you want to know what is universally considered the best thing to learn for internet marketing, it is copywriting. There are many reasons for this, and they just about all have an effect on conversions as well as sales. Every person starts at the same place, even the most familiar names had to start somewhere. But something they all have in common is they originally did their own copywriting, and so that means they mastered enough of it. However once they began bringing in an income they could hire writers to do their copy. It is important to be aware of what a well written piece of copy looks like, and that is a further good reason to educate yourself about it.

best premium wordpress themes ? Copywriting that helps make conversions generally has the fundamentals down solidly. We will speak about developing rapport with your readers because that is critical to everything else. By doing so, you will be helping your visitors to get more comfortable and let their defensiveness drop. So to begin with, the best thing to do is speak to the reader as if nobody else exists. Just how you begin doing that is by addressing the reader with ?you.? Remember that, generally speaking, you really should talk to that person one on one.

Another poweful copywriting strategy is to mention possible questions that could arise. If you do very good market research, then you can even base this on highly specific questions and problems. This is quite simple but highly effective, and all you do is tackle the common problems your audience has as it relates to your offer. Whenever your copy is generally well written, then accomplishing this can definitely have a tremendous impact on the reader. But understand that all of your copywriting for any given piece of content must be working effectively.

Hopefully you are aware of the serious value of your headline. That pertains to sales letters, posting headlines, static website articles and blog posts at the same time. Your headline is actually the mini sales letter for the rest of your copy regardless of what it is. You can write headlines in a variety of ways using different methods for specific situations. If you do not know your target audience, then you can readily say the wrong thing and you are done. But if you need to know what typically works very well, it is to convey the strongest profit they stand to get. You realize that markets are absolutely selfish, and they just want to know what you have for them.

You have most likely read sales letter copy that have benefit bullets. But nothing is stopping you from including them on your blogs, static web pages or even marketing articles. Well-crafted benefit bullets work to connect the readers thoughts by the force of impact when they read them. Great bullets will have the effect of creating a longing for your product that will not go away. But most of these copy devices also help to separate the text and provide the necessary white space. You generally want to stay away from having only long text because that usually makes the person avoid reading.

(AP) ? Sales of new homes dipped in January but the final quarter of 2011 was stronger than first estimated.

The Commerce Department said Friday that new-home sales fell 0.9 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 321,000 homes. That followed four straight months of gains in which home sales rose 10 percent.

The gains came after the government upwardly revised October, November and December's figures. December's annual sales pace of 324,000 was the highest in a year.

Even with more sales, just 304,000 new homes were sold in 2011 ? the fewest on records dating back to 1963. And new homes are selling well below the 700,000-per-year rate that economists equate with healthy markets.

Still, the pickup in sales at the end of last year coincides with other improvements in the housing market and should bolster the view that the depressed sector is starting to revive.

Pierre Ellis, an economist at Decision Economics, said the improvement lends "additional support to the housing market," and mirrors other positive signs in the industry.

Builders are growing more optimistic after seeing more people express interest in buying this year. They've also sought more permits to build single-family homes ? one of several encouraging signs across the housing industry.

Sales prices for new homes are rising. The median sales price of a new home rose 0.3 percent in January to $217,100.

In January, sales of previously occupied homes reached their highest level in nearly two years. And they have risen more than 13 percent in the past six months. Mortgage rates have never been lower.

Most importantly, hiring has improved, which is critical to a housing rebound. The economy added more than 200,000 net jobs in both December and January. And economists anticipate another big month of hiring in February after seeing unemployment benefit applications fall to the lowest level in nearly four years. The unemployment rate was 8.3 percent in January, its lowest level in nearly three years.

Economists caution that housing is a long way from fully recovering. Builders have stopped working on many projects because it's been hard for them to get financing or to compete with cheaper resale homes. For many Americans, buying a home remains too big a risk more than four years after the housing bubble burst.

Though new-home sales represent less than 10 percent of the housing market, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs for a year and generates about $90,000 in tax revenue, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

A key reason for the dismal 2011 sales is that builders must compete with foreclosures and short sales ? when lenders accept less for a house than what is owed on the mortgage

Builders ended 2011 with a third straight year of dismal home construction and the worst on record for single-family home building. But in a hopeful sign, single-family home construction, which makes up 70 percent of the market, increased in each of the last three months.

(AP) ? Danica Patrick walked away OK after taking a hard hit to the wall in her qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday.

Her race car didn't fare quite so well.

Patrick was caught up in a crash on the final lap of the first of two 150-mile qualifying races, sending her car into the wall on the backstretch. The wreck ripped the front end off Patrick's car, and she'll have to use a backup car in Sunday's Daytona 500.

After being released from the infield medical care center, Patrick said she hoped her backup car might be even faster than her primary car.

"I'm just very disappointed that the car got crashed with two corners to go," Patrick said. "It's not how we wanted to roll into Sunday. We wanted to just be cool, calm and collected with no damage. But like I said, maybe that backup car's fast."

Maybe, she joked, the accident will turn out to be a "blessing in big disguise."

But Patrick's race strategist, Greg Zipadelli, was in no mood for jokes as his team tended to Patrick's wrecked car.

"Her biggest thing was she wanted to go out there and ride with a bunch of guys and be in there and earn the respect of them ? she can do this, she's not all over the place," Zipadelli said. "I mean, I never saw her car move. I saw a lot of grown men couldn't keep their car under control. So maybe they need to work on that."

Patrick wasn't even sure what happened to cause the crash.

"I just got hit," Patrick said. "Just running on the bottom lane and I'm betting it was the chain reaction from the outside, it looked like. Guys get so close on the side drafting that they're touching you sometimes. I'm sure that at times, maybe in that situation it was a 'hitting' side draft. It was just probably a chain reaction."

Tony Stewart, Patrick's team owner for a part-time schedule in the Sprint Cup Series this season, tried to keep an eye on his driver as he also ran the first race ? which Stewart ended up winning.

"I'll get a better shot (at) understanding exactly how her race went when I get to see a replay of the race," Stewart said. "The little bit I could see, I thought she did a good job. There wasn't any doubt in my mind she would do that."

Patrick spent most of the race running just outside the top 10, working her way up to sixth at one point. She had a close call early on, darting to the apron at the bottom of the track to avoid an accident.

"At times, it was much more calm than I expected, to be honest," Patrick said. "When we got single-file or very steady two-lane racing it was pretty calm. So I felt like I learned a lot. I was learning a lot about the side draft and what to do in those situations, how to get the most out of it."

Stewart said one of Patrick's biggest priorities right now is earning the respect and trust of fellow Cup drivers.

"It's hard for her now because she's trying to gain the confidence of the guys around her that she's solid and is going to make good decisions," Stewart said.

Patrick has committed full-time to NASCAR this year. She'll run Nationwide for JR Motorsports, and plans to run a partial Cup schedule driving for Stewart.

"I feel really feel good," Patrick said. "I feel comfortable, I feel confident, I feel like if things fall our way and I can take the experience from today into Sunday, I think it will be a good day. And obviously, things that are out of your control can make it a bad day, but that's kind of the excitement about racing."

Stewart knows Patrick hasn't yet shown what she's capable of in NASCAR.

"I think there's more aggression and confidence in her than what she showed here today," Stewart said. "It shows her poise and what she's trying to do to gain the other drivers' confidence."

As gas prices soar, Californians test life above the $4-a-gallon mark

Gas prices that have already surged beyond $4 a gallon are forcing California consumers and business-owners to cut back and try to make do with less.

Gas prices are giving handyman Sal Kalil a very tough time.

?I?m putting more money into my truck than into anything else in my life,? he says.

His 1995 pickup only gets about 10 miles per gallon, tethering him to work ? painting, carpentry, odd jobs ? close to his Pasadena home.

?I?m not eating like I usually do and am forgoing all kinds of things because of this,? Mr. Kalil says.

His predicament will be common to more and more people nationwide in the next few weeks as gas prices surge toward the $4-per-gallon mark, a psychological threshold at which analysts say consumers begin to dramatically modify their behavior.

For the moment, the average price of self-serve regular in the nation?s most populous state is 31 cents per gallon higher ($3.83) than the national average ($3.52), according to the California Energy Commission. But from Feb. 8 to 15, the price Californians paid already topped $4.10.

The result is impacting people and businesses in the Golden State in profound ways.

?We are spending $90,000 a week on gasoline for our fleet,? says Keith Lutrel, general manager of Lutrel Trucking Inc., in Bakersfield. He calculates the 60-cent rise per gallon since August has bumped up the cost to keep his fleet of 35 trucks on the road by $15,000 per week.

?It?s getting harder and harder to survive with fuel prices like these,? says his brother Rick. ?Only the really big companies ? 200-400 trucks ? can survive nowadays,? he says. ?Will this [firm] last another generation? I doubt it.?

Michael Kopilevich, owner of OnTime Limousine in Los Angeles, says high-priced gas is now burning through about 20 percent of his company?s revenue, compared with 7 to 10 percent in 2008.

?In general, everything in my life is changed in a bad way because gas prices are tied to everything ? it?s just a big chain reaction,? says Mr. Kopilevich, whose firm has 12 limousines and 7 full-time drivers. To make ends meet,?he says, he is deferring maintenance, vacations, and new-car purchases.

The owner of family-run Affordable Limousine Service ? who requested his name not be used ? says he is making ends meet by moonlighting with other companies that require chauffeur?s licenses, even making food deliveries.

?To stay in business, we have to keep cutting our prices to the bone,? he says. He wonders aloud whether competing firms are forgoing insurance payments.

In this biography, the acclaimed author of Sons of Providence , winner of the 2007 George Wash- ington Book Prize, recovers an immensely important part of the founding drama of the country in the story of Robert Morris, the man who financed Washington’s armies and the American Revolution. Morris started life in the colonies as an apprentice in a counting house. By the time of the Revolution he was a rich man, a commercial and social leader in Philadelphia. He organized a clandestine trading network to arm the American rebels, joined the Second Continental Congress, and financed George Washington’s two crucial victories—Valley Forge and the culminating battle at Yorktown that defeated Cornwallis and ended the war. The leader of a faction that included Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Washington, Morris ran the executive branches of the revolutionary government for years. He was a man of prodigious energy and adroit management skills and was the most successful businessman on the continent. He laid the foundation for public credit and free capital markets that helped make America a global economic leader. But he incurred powerful enemies who considered his wealth and influence a danger to public ?virtue? in a democratic society. After public service, he gambled on land speculations that went bad, and landed in debtors prison, where George Washington, his loyal friend, visited him. GPS jamming: a clear and present reality

Paul Marks, senior technology correspondent

ShipGrounded.jpg

(Image: Torsten Blackwood/AFP/Getty Images)A secret network of 20 roadside listening stations across the UK has confirmed that criminals are attempting to jam GPS signals on a regular basis, a conference at the National Physical Laboratory, in London, will hear later today.?Set up by the government's Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and run by Chronos Technology of the Forest of Dean, UK, the Sentinel network has sensed an average of ten jamming incidents per month since September 2011, according to Chronos chief Charles Curry.?

Details on the incidents are scant as Sentinel is still evaluating the causes, but at least one jamming device has been seized. Oddly, more than one person appears to be responsible for the jamming at some locations: Chronos is trying to differentiate between different jammers to give "a better idea of how many individuals at a particular location are jamming GPS". Vigilantes could be one source: a major problem with GPS is the way some small villages and towns suffer visits from dangerously outsized trucks - which often get stuck in tiny streets - attempting to follow satnav-advised shortcuts. So it is possible locals are placing jammers to prevent drivers' antisocial behaviour.

The GPS signal is weak and easily jammed - it's radiation is only as intense as a car headlight shining from 20,000 kilometres away. Hundreds of online vendors illegally sell jamming equipment online yet at the same time the GPS signal has fast become critical national infrastructure. In addition to location services via satnavs, the atomic clocks aboard the satellites are used to provide crucial timing signals for systems as diverse as cellphone towers and banking systems - and without GPS they fall over. That's why it's no surprise that a US company called LightSquared, which wanted to run a 4G cellphone service very near to the GPS frequencies,?has been barred from doing so?by the Federal Communications Commission. It could not demonstrate that its technology could steer clear of GPS signals that stray from its alloted bandwidth.?The conference will also hear about how the GPS signal can be spoofed so that satnavs are lured in the wrong direction. You can see videos of how spoofing works over at the University of Texas. Spoofers could become the latterday equivalent of wreckers who used to make false lights to draw ships onto the rocks. The General Lighthouse Authorities, for instance, suspect that ships are now so dependent on GPS that in the world's busiest sealane - the English Channel - they confidently expect "an incident" due to GPS failure, jamming or spoofing in the next decade.

"The question for the authorities is what we are going to do once the owners of jammers are identified and how can we prevent others using them," says Curry.
