Delaware residents head inland as Irene threatens coast (Reuters)

MILFORD, Delaware (Reuters) ? Delaware residents headed inland on Saturday, under orders to evacuate homes within three-quarters of a mile of the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware River and other waterways ahead of Hurricane Irene.

The hurricane's center path was expected to pass closer than previously forecast to Delaware and Ocean City, Md., the National Hurricane Center said.

It was likely to pass within 10 miles of Delaware's southeastern most corner and make a brief landfall along New Jersey's barrier islands before slamming into Long Island and New England, it said.

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell said at a briefing that 8 to 12 inches of rain were expected, with flooding, when the powerful storm arrived on Saturday night.

Hundreds of people took advantage of seven shelters opened up around Delaware to await Irene's arrival.

Roads in the area, including Route 1, the main evacuation router, were beginning to flood and gusts of wind were growing stronger.

Robert Hudson, a 64-year-old military retiree, said he came to a shelter at Milford High School out of concern for his step-daughter, granddaughter and wife.

"Things can be replaced, but life can't be," he said.

For Lelia Stone, 80, who has lived in Seaford, Delaware since 1967, the storm marked the first time she has ever been forced to flee her home.

She brought to the shelter "everything but the kitchen stove," including a Pomeranian named Sugar Bear, she said.

Nearby, Christina Schuyler, a 22-year-old stay-at-home mother from Allendale, passed the time playing cards. She said she was unimpressed by the storm and the dire predictions.

"It's just some wind," she said, adding that she was looking forward to Sunday when she could say "I told you so."

Delmarva Power reported that more than 2,000 of its customers in Delaware and Maryland had lost electric service as the first effects of Irene were being felt.

In the tourist area of Rehoboth Beach, about 15 people gathered in the Gray Hare Tavern, seemingly the only business open and just a few miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean.

Bartender Robin Yeager, 44, said business was steady all day, partly because there was no place else to go.

Jonathan Walker, 60, and his son Jonathan Walker II, 29, of Millsboro Delaware, were passing the afternoon shooting pool and discussing the impact from the storm on the local economy, which depends heavily on tourist income in the summer months.

The son, a bartender, said Irene could cause a local depression if restaurants and bars lose this weekend and next weekend's Labor Day due to storm damage.

Their biggest personal concern was trees knocking out electricity. The elder Walker had just bought a chainsaw for the clean up.

"A lot of local people can make a lot of money off a storm," his son said.

On the whole, they didn't seem particularly concerned.

"People are scared to death because of the hype. Everybody is scared of everything and it's just another natural phenomena. It sums up America: scared," said the elder Walker.

Apple stock recovers from shock of Jobs resigning (AP)

NEW YORK ? Apple shareholders on Thursday appeared to be getting over the sudden resignation of Steve Jobs.

Apple Inc. shares fell $4.03, or about 1 percent, to $372.16 in midday trading, but the entire market was down by an equal amount as well. In extended trading Thursday evening, the fell more than 5 percent after Apple said Jobs would step down as CEO and hand the job to chief operating officer Tim Cook.

Jobs will stay on as chairman at Apple.

Even if the timing was a surprise, most industry analysts said Jobs' departure from the CEO post was always on the horizon because of ongoing health problems.

Peter Misek at Jefferies & Co. said it was a very positive sign that Jobs will assume the role of chairman. Misek had expected Jobs to depart completely from the company. As chairman, "Jobs will be able to continue to offer his insights and visions for the future of Apple."

The immediate sell-off of Apple for fear of an end to one of the industry's longest winning streaks was overdone, said Ovum analyst Jan Dawson.

"These fears appear relatively unfounded at least in the short-term," Dawson said.

The company is in capable hands with Cook, Dawson said, but he acknowledged that he doesn't have the charisma and vision of Jobs, which could hamper the company in years to come.

Richard Gardner at Citigroup recommended buying during any retreat in share price. Jobs laid a strong foundation for the company, and Gardner expects the company to gain market share for years.

"In our view, Tim (Cook) is a tough but well-regarded leader who will continue to hold Apple employees to an extremely high standard of performance," Gardner wrote.

With a market capitalization of $344 billion, Apple is the world's second-most valuable publicly traded company after Exxon Mobil Corp. This summer, Apple briefly dethroned Exxon for the first time ever.

In 2004, Jobs, now 56, underwent surgery for a rare but curable form of pancreatic cancer. Apple disclosed his illness only afterward.

Just four years later, speculation about Jobs' health ran rampant when it appeared he was losing a lot of weight. In September of that year, he appeared at an Apple event saying, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated," after Bloomberg News accidentally published, then retracted, an obituary that it had prepared in advance.

In 2009, Jobs said his severe weight loss was due to a treatable hormone imbalance and that he would continue to run Apple, only days later to backtrack and take a medical leave. He returned to work in mid-summer. Later it is learned that he received a liver transplant.

In January, Jobs announced a second medical leave, but did not say for how long. He did say, however, that he would still be involved in major decisions.

Jobs' decision to step down as CEO, however, is hitting companies that do business with Apple hard.

In Taiwan, shares of Apple's suppliers and contractors fell harder than Apple shares.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., also known as Foxconn, saw its shares fall 4.6 percent. The company assembles Apple's iPhones and iPads in an enormous factory town on the Chinese mainland.

Shares of Wintek Corp., which makes touch screens for Apple, fell 6.9 percent in Taiwanese trading. Shares of Cheng Uei Precision Industry Co., which makes headphone jacks and other connecting components, fell 4.3 percent.

Shares of Taiwanese Apple competitor HTC Corp. rose 1.4 percent, going against the market. Overall, the Taiwan market fell 1.2 percent.

In the U.S., shares of Google Inc., whose phone and tablet software competes with Apple's, rose $2.19, or 0.4 percent, at $525.48.

VERACRUZ, Mexico ? Authorities in southern Mexico say they have detained a third person for allegedly tweeting rumors of shootouts and other drug violence.

State prosecutors in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz say police are investigating whether the man is connected with two others detained Thursday.

Prosecutors have said they plan to file terrorism charges against anyone who tweeted the rumors of planned cartel attacks.

The rumors of attacks by the Zetas drug cartel caused chaos in Veracruz city and neighboring Boca del Rio caused chaos as parents rushed to schools trying to retrieve their children.

The tweets warned of attacks on banks and schools, saying that "for each Zeta killed a child will die."

This time, Washington is pushing itself and local officials from the Carolinas to New England to get out ahead of the storm. The National Hurricane Center is mapping storm surges at a worst-case high-tide scenario, and FEMA mobilized assets along the storm paths days ahead.

"We're taking this storm very seriously, and I know that our state and local partners are as well,? said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano at a teleconference with reporters on Friday. ?In fact, we?ve already seen a number of states declare emergencies even ahead of the storm.?

Asked whether the government might be overhyping the threat by comparing hurricane Irene (a weakening Category 2 storm) with Katrina (a strong Category 3 storm), FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate told reporters on Friday: ?I think when people think of Katrina, they think of the homes that were destroyed with the flooding. And that may be something we see in the storm surge areas along the coast.?

The point of the official warnings and preparation was to save lives, he said. Government may not be able to prevent storm damage or avoid power outages, "But the one thing we can change the outcome on is loss of life, and that's why the evacuation orders that are being issued in the coastal areas are key," he said.

In preliminary figures, overall sales from the five major auctions climbed above $200 million, about 15 percent higher than last year?s sales, which showed the solid strength of the collector-car market, particularly in its highest reaches.

(Photo: RM Auctions) Canadian auction house RM once again took bragging rights for the highest sales totals at an impressive $80 million, compared with $67 million last year, including the significant auctions of rare Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari automobiles.

Leading the pack was the $9,680,000 for an outstanding 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster, the Holy Grail of Mercedes collectors, which set a record for a Mercedes-Benz sold at auction. Five other pre-war Mercedes cars also rang the bell, each of them supercharged specials that sold well into seven figures.

RM?s top Ferrari sale went to a 1960 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione at a lofty $5,280,000, followed by the unique and historic 1952 340 Mexico Berlinetta, which sold for $3,685,000.

(Photo: Gooding & Company) The highest RM result that was not a Mercedes or a Ferrari came at No. 12 with the remarkable sale of the 1970 Porsche 911S formerly owned by the late Steve McQueen and driven by him in the opening sequences of the movie Le Mans. Magically enhanced by the McQueen connection, the Porsche sold for $1.39 million, a record for a 911 sold at auction by a very long shot.

Gooding & Company may have come in just behind RM in sales totals, $78 million for this year compared with $65.5 million in 2010, but Gooding scored major hits with the two top sales of the week, each of which set resounding records.

(Photo: Mecum Auctions) Everyone was expecting big money for the actual prototype 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa with its evocative pontoon styling by Scaglietti, but the monumental $16,390,000 sale was still a stunner. It also broke the old highest-sale record for a collector car at auction, also a Ferrari 250 TR, by more than $4 million.

The other record-setter was the 1931 Duesenberg Long Wheelbase Model J Whittell Coupe, which at $10,340,000 was the most ever paid for an American car at auction. Gooding also set a world record for the 1963 Shelby Cobra 289 Factory Team Car that sold for $2,585,000.

Gooding?s 15 highest sales each broke the seven-figure mark, with RM close behind with 14 sales crossing into the millions.

Mecum joined the millionaires club with the sale of a historic race car, the 1931 Indy 500-winning Miller Bower Seal Fast Special that sold for $2 million. Top sale behind that was for a 1912 Mercer Raceabout going for $625,000. Total sales for Mecum were just under $25 million, a leap above its $15 million sale last year.

The 1960 Maserati Tipo 61/60 Birdcage at Mecum that created some controversy regarding its authenticity failed to make reserve although it was bid up to $1.85 million.

Russo and Steele sales were also up, hitting $8.5 million compared with about $6 million last year for its collection of mostly muscle cars, sports cars and Detroit cruisers. The top four sales hit all those buttons:

? 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS, $654,500.
? 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, $286,000.
? 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, $198,000.
? 1959 DeSoto Adventurer, $192,500.

The Bonhams auction at the Quail Lodge reached $11 million, with the top sale also breaking into the seven figures, a 1957 BMW 507 roadster that sold for $1,002,500, followed by a 1966 Porsche 906 Coupe at $898,000.

Bonhams? third-place sale was the unique offering of the only BMW ?Art Car? ever to come to auction, although it is not one of the factory cars. The 1979 BMW M1 Pro Car originally owned by racer Peter Gregg and painted by Frank Stella ? one of BMW?s original Art Car artists ? sold for $852,000.

Factbox: U.S. East Coast energy sites brace for Irene (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Oil terminals, refineries, pipelines and nuclear power plants from the Bahamas to Rhode Island braced for Hurricane Irene on Thursday.

The major Category 3 storm with winds of 115 mph roared through the Bahamas on a path expected to take it up the U.S. East Coast by the weekend.

Unlike a storm in the Gulf of Mexico, an East Coast storm does not threaten significant U.S. crude oil and natural gas production.

The Department of Energy calls the refining region PADD 1. It is the second smallest of the five U.S. refining regions, with most of its fuel being supplied by pipeline from the Gulf Coast or tanker ship from Europe. But there are six refineries and numerous storage and shipping terminals on or near the coast.

There also are six nuclear plants on or very near the East Coast, and operators were preparing them for a possible visit by Irene in the next few days.

REFINERIES

* PBF Energy said it was preparing for storm conditions at its 182,200 barrel-per-day (bpd) Delaware City, Delaware, refinery, and its 160,000 bpd Paulsboro, New Jersey, refinery.

* ConocoPhillips said it was monitoring the storm as a precaution for its 238,000 bpd Bayway refinery at Linden, New Jersey, and its 190,000 bpd refinery at Trainer, Pa.

* Sunoco Inc said its Marcus Hook, Pa, refinery, 194,000 bpd, and its Philadelphia refinery, 355,000 bpd, were "monitoring the storm closely and have begun taking steps."

NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

* Progress Energy said it was preparing its Brunswick nuclear power plant on the coast at Southport, North Carolina. Two reactors, 900-plus megawatts (mw) each.

* Public Service Enterprise Group said it would shut down Salem and Hope Creek plants in New Jersey near Wilmington, Delaware, before hurricane winds arrive. Salem is a two-reactor, 2,300-mw facility. Hope Creek is a single-reactor, 1,061-mw plant.

* Entergy said its two-unit, 2,069-mw plant at Indian Point, 24 miles north of New York City, and its 688-mw plant at Plymouth, Mass, near Boston, were securing equipment, fueling backup generators and reviewing procedures.

SHIPPING

* The U.S. Coast Guard said decisions whether to limit or stop New York Harbor traffic depending on the storm's path, no restrictions yet.

OIL STORAGE, TRANSSHIPMENT TERMINALS

* Buckeye Partners said its 21.6-million-barrel storage facility in the Bahamas escaped damage as Irene passed, but monitoring conditions before restarting operations.

* Statoil also planned shutdown of its 6.75 million-barrel storage facility at South Riding Point on Grand Bahama Island.

* Sunoco Inc said it was "monitoring the storm closely" and "taking steps under our hurricane preparedness plan" to ready terminals at Newark, NJ, and areas under threat from Irene.

* Kinder Morgan said it was readying its major petroleum terminals at Carteret, N.J., 7.2 million barrels; Perth Amboy, N.J., 3.5 million barrels and Staten Isl, N.Y., 2,959,700.

* Magellan Midstream Partners said its terminals at New Haven, Conn., 4 million barrels, and Wilmington, Del., 2.8 million barrels, continued to operate as they prepared for the storm.

Enterprise Products said its Providence, Rhode Island, propane ship terminal was monitoring the storm and making preparations for a possible visit by Irene.

PIPELINES

* El Paso Corp said its Tennessee Gas Pipeline unit notified customers it anticipated limited flexibility to manage imbalances if Irene impacts areas it serves on the East Coast.

* Kinder Morgan said it was "fueling vehicles, generators, pumps and securing equipment" around all facilities, including Plantation products pipeline.

* Colonial Pipeline, a major petroleum products pipeline supplying the East from the Gulf Coast refining complex, said it was monitoring the storm.

* NiSource said it was preparing its Columbia gas transmission system for Irene and will take appropriate actions as a result of the storm threat.

LNG TERMINALS

* GDF Suez said its Everett, Massachusetts, liquefied natural gas import terminal has backup power and no ship arrivals scheduled during period Irene is a threat.

COAL TERMINALS

* Kinder Morgan said its Pier IX coal exporting terminal at Newport News, Va, will close for 24 hours on Saturday. Annual capacity 14 million short tons.

* Norfolk Southern said its Lamberts Point coal terminal at Norfolk, Va., was loading a final ship before shutting down on Friday to await passage of the storm.

RAIL LINES

* NS said it was preparing its rail service along the East Coast to weather the storm and will hold shipments away from seaports pending Irene's passage.

Well having combined families today is more common then having both mom and dad together, with that being said our society over the last 50 years has begun a trend in where combined families are common place. In the early 1900 90% of the families were together and rarely were their divorces, thus making combined family a rare thing. In the early days families stuck together regardless of the situation even if it meant being miserable and abused. Thankfully times have changed for the better in that regard as millions of women were abused their whole life without any chance of happiness.

Well with our generation (30-70 years old) with combined families faced situations that our grandparents never had to deal with. We are faced with some unusual and at times uncomfortable situations because of the word associated with a combined family, Step-Dad or Step-Mom are two words in our society that quite possibly the most trying in our new culture of combined families.
The stigma attached to these words do not have quite the bite they once did 40 years ago because of the sheer amount of combined families, but make no mistake in the end they will undoubtedly come into play in your relationship with your significant other.

As families combine there is of course a Major Adjustment period that can take years in developing, with hard work and some luck the families will adjust and even perhaps come together as a family unit, but often this does not always happen, their is usual clash of personalities with the combined families and of course depending on the age, this can be corrected. As we all know the younger the kids are the better chance of having a combined family survive the sometimes troublesome meeting of the minds. And teens are often very reluctant to adjust or accepted mom or dad moving on with a new partner coming into their lives.

There will undoubtedly the clash of how to raise the kids, with each and every one of us being raised differently it is always a tough task and hard work to make sure as parents we are on the same page and agree to disagree when necessary to insure the proper raising of these kids stuck in the middle of this newly formed family unit.

But when parents disagree on how to raised the kids that is when trouble starts, even younger kids can pick up quickly on parents disagreeing and will quickly start using this as a tool for getting what they want. When the parent states that a rule is a rule with a good explanation (Example 9:30 curfew for young teens) then parents must stay together on the rules of the house or the family will not make it and will head towards divorce. Kids will smell divide and will conquer, teens have a built in sensor of when to get parents working against each other, and when one of the parents goes behind the other parent and tells the (their naturally born) kids its ok to break the rules or lie repeatedly despite what the step mom or dad says then one can rest assure of two things certain to happen.

The first thing would be a impending divorce as we all know once the family gets broken down and the step-kids are allow to disrespect the step-mom or dad and have the parent allow these kids to do so there is very little left in the marriage, when the step kids are allow to do what they want and totally ignore the step parents rules then the family unit is now broken down and perhaps some counselling for the entire family may be a answer but if the one parent does not see why parents must stick together on house issues/rules counseling will not fix that issue and the disrespecting and arguing will continue.

The second choice again is the counselling, but sometime feelings are betrayed beyond the point of fixing, when kids are taught to lie and disrespect the step-parent with the mom or dad allowing it this is the kiss of death in any relationship. United we stand Divided we fall is the common themes to a successful combined family. And again with some hard work alot of love and understanding and of course the two parents acting as one is the best remedy of any failing combined family that is going through this difficulty.

I?m not impressed with our current Patent system.? The primary purpose of our Constitution-based Patents in the US was to encourage the development of new technologies which would be of the greatest benefit to the community at large.? It?s served us well for more than a hundred years.

Around the year 1900, a Japanese commissioner in Washington, DC studied the American patent system and stated: ?We have looked about us to see what nations are the greatest, so that we can be like them? We said, ?What makes the United States such a great nation?? and we investigated and found that it was patents, and we will have patents.?

Today, things have changed with our lowly patent system.? In an attempt to ?revitalize? patents, in the interest of ?reform,? Lawyers are working with Congress to pass laws which would purportedly make it easier and quicker to get patents.? Wonderful.? Make a broken system even faster so that it can break things even more quickly?? One of the key changes is to remove the exception for ?Prior Art,? something that will further hurt our community here in the US as it allows ?first to patent? to have all the rights even if the inventor has released all of their rights or hasn?t been able to afford the lawyers necessary to file the patent (at least $10k in most cases).

Enter Kodak?s current position.? According to Bloomberg, Kodak is worth Five Times as Much broken up than they are as a company producing products.? Why?? Because of their patent portfolio.

Patent portfolios are being used more and more by sharks to beat up small businesses to the point that innovation is being almost completely stifled. A quick Google Search will show hundreds of recent problems.

Small business can?t afford to protect themselves from the inevitable law suits that will come from the big companies holding thousands (or tens of thousands) of patents in their portfolios.? Having a few patents, which is about all most small companies can afford to file, just isn?t enough to be able to barter their way out of a law suit with the big technology companies, which is causing a loss of innovation resulting in problems for the consumers.

Ultimately this bullying by the big sharks? attorneys in patent cases is going to hurt the big boys.? Their growth and R&D strategies for the past three decades has been primarily to purchase small companies with innovative technologies.? With so many small companies being assaulted by big patent portfolios, their source of new technologies will be drying up.

What kind of Patent Reform would help?? The easiest, and quickest solution, would be to completely eliminate software patents.? Most companies use Trade Secrets to protect their short-lived Intellectual Property assets anyway, and the software patents are what are causing the true innovation problem throughout the world and right here in the good ?ole USA.

Rest in peace, Kodak.? How great you once were.

Consol selling some Marcellus interests for $3.4B (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Consol Energy Inc. said Thursday that it will sell half of its interest in its Marcellus Shale holdings in Pennsylvania and West Virginia for $3.4 billion in a deal that gives Noble Energy Inc. access to the lucrative Marcellus natural gas market.

Under the deal, Houston-based Noble Energy will buy half of Consol's Marcellus development rights and existing wells in those states. The deal involves 663,350 acres that Consol has under lease in both states.

The Marcellus Shale is one of the biggest natural gas fields in the world, stretching from New York through West Virginia. It has been a hotbed of activity for energy companies in recent years as extraction of natural gas from shale deposits has accelerated with a process known as "fracking." While oil and gas companies insist the process is safe, environmentalists have expressed concerns about groundwater contamination from chemicals used to get to the gas.

Consol's chairman and chief executive officer J. Brett Harvey said in a statement that the two companies "will be able to accelerate the development of this significant resource safely, efficiently and economically."

Consol said it will double its Marcellus well rig count from four to eight this year. It plans to go up to 12 rigs by 2013 and 16 by 2015. Despite splitting its drilling interests with Noble, Consol still expects to meet its production target of 350 billion cubic feet by 2015.

"This transaction affirms the value we saw in the Marcellus Shale when we acquired Dominion's Appalachian exploration and production business just 15 months ago," Harvey said.

The deal marks Noble's entry into the Marcellus Shale development.

Charles Davidson, the exploration and production company's chairman and chief executive officer, said the partnership with Consol is "the right entry point into the Marcellus" for his company.

Analysts Michael McAllister and Tim Rezvan with Sterne, Agee & Leach Equity Research said the deal looked like a good one from Noble's perspective "as the terms are neither indicative of overpaying nor are they onerous." The deal works out to about $7,100 per acre, which the analysts said was "in line with what Chevron paid for Atlas Energy," in a $4.3 billion acquisition in February.

For Consol, the deal was a chance to cash in on the acreage acquired from Dominion last year and "fund something else in their portfolio," the analysts said.

Consol expects to pay down debt, issue dividends or buy back stock with any excess cash from the Noble deal.

The deal is expected to close on Sept. 30 and includes $1.07 billion payable over three years for 50 percent of Consol's undivided interest in Marcellus Shale acreage. The bulk of the deal will see Noble pay $2.13 billion to carry 33 percent of Consol's costs over the next eight years.

Noble Energy will also pay $160 million for existing Consol Marcellus wells and another $59 million for 50 percent interest in Consol's pipelines connecting the wells to interstate gas transmission pipelines.

Consol shares rose 27 cents at $42.69. Early gains evaporated amid a broad sell-off in the stock markets. Noble shares fell $4.65 or 5.3 percent, to $83.29 in morning trading.
